Living Magazine September 2013

This is something I am sharing for your weekend read.

Martha being a savvy businesswoman made sure she competed with all the other September issues out there.  This issue was filled with so many tips that I hope to but probably will never use.

Do you write out your calendar like Martha?
I am thinking of starting one myself.
Doesn't she look so pretty?  Love how good she looks.
I am just surprised it has taken her so long to produce this blue and white chinoiserie collection.  If I lived near a Macy's, I would have already filled my cupboards with this.

Omelettes would look great on those plates.
Omelets are such a easy and delicious meal/snack.
For the non-foodies who might not know, most chefs are asked to make an omelet to show their skill as a chef and
not a complicated dish like Chateaubriand as one would suspect.

These candied tomatoes look great.
And never leave home without your Amex and a few bottles of vinegar in the pantry.  Vinegar is so under-appreciated.

Here's how to preserve all those herbs
you might be growing.
Even I grow herbs so you have no excuse!

This recipe is more the type of thing I think I should be eating this autumn.  Easy to make, healthy, and filling.
This has to be the most useless recipe unless
you are a strawberry farmer.  Anyone tried these?

One of the places I am presently dreaming about moving to is Charleston, SC.  This place is a close second to my number one U.S. destination being New Orleans.  If it weren't for visa restrictions,
I would be eating beignets and etouffe.
All day. Every day.

But Charleston has a great local dish called shrimp and grits that I love as if my grandma made it for me.  Neither nana did but I love it like I grew up with it.
For those that haven't been imagine if the city of Bath in England was sunny with palm trees next to the ocean and you never had to ask for hot sauce in any restaurant you went to.

Keep this concise guide for your future trip.

Martha did a proper beauty section this month.

Love the mathematics to brow arches.
I like the Clarisonic but think it does get abused a bit.
Have you heard that Aerin Lauder, one of the highest ranking employees of Estee Lauder doesn't get facials?
Most interesting.
This is proof instead of anecdotal advice that sleep is good for you!
It's great she tells us about Sirtuins but how do I get 'em?
You know this is going to be my word of the month.

I am not so strict about a lot of stuff but one thing I really make sure to avoid is mineral oil. So look out for mineral oil in your potions. Long story short - not good.

This recipe looks like a staple plus its flourless.

It's in honor of her new cake cookbook.

Love miso and its health benefits
but I am not convinced about miso chocolate ganache!
If someone does try it, please let me know how it worked out...

Although I do like the idea of this tea affogato
instead of using coffee.  Seems more delicate somehow.

More tips in cleaning up.

Questions like this is way below Martha's pay grade
for crying out loud.

The different end results in grout is interesting.

I know the idea of bird feeders is so sweet and a natural cycle.
But one of the biggest enablers for rats are bird feeders. Every rat catchers says it is a vermin magnet so I don't have one.

Some ideas for kids parties.
A game and ways to keep drinks chilled plus
have a balloon fight afterwards.

This section was all the organization tips from Martha.
I decline to comment as that would be like a color blind person helping you choose paint colors.

This was a great tutorial for those wanting to try a Japanese style garden.  It breaks down the design principles and techniques.

Tom Scheerer is doing a media campaign for his new book.
He's a talented designer and he gives some basic tips to home decor.

Martha shared some lighting ideas and how to make things.
If I could I would but I can't so I won't.
This is for you who can...

Hope you got some relevant and useful tips this month!

  1. What an eclectic mix of articles - so much in this month's issue! The blue and white chinoiserie is fabulous and Charleston definitely looks like my kind of place. Not somewhere I have really considered before! Flourless chocolate espresso cake - doesn't that just sound divine?

  2. Thanks for your comment about the elephants. Just thought I would let you know that they will appparently be in London from the 28th July 2014 so you may still have one outside your door!

    1. Thanks Miss B, I do love those elephants. They were selling them last time around but they were very expensive...

  3. Thanks for sharing this!

    She is so good.

    I really love those gardens.

I always wonder about the...romantic implications...for people who wear things like thick masks or creams to bed.

Do you like your Clairsonic? I am always tempted, but it's an expensive experiment.

    1. Not at all Abby! Yes I love the garden tutorials Martha is doing because otherwise if you are a novice gardener you have no idea where to start. Clarisonic is ok. But it strips your skin and if you over exfoliate then you get milia. Also apparently if you have oily skin then it makes it oilier due to stimulation. This is according to the skin guru Caroline Hirons by the way - she has a blog beauty mouth which is exceptional if you are interested in reading about skincare further. Yes masks are not very romantic :)

  4. I've got a calendar to note everything! Otherwise I'd forget all my meetings lol!
    Nice article darling!

    1. I need to start as I tend to just remember stuff but not good for last minute changes xx

  5. I love my Clarisonic. Frankly, i have no time to go and get facials, or DIY at home even. I might think to myself "I should do an exfoliating mask tonight" and then reremember I was thinking about doing that 3 weeks later. And then take another 2 weeks to get around to it. The clarisonic has definitely improved my skin. My only complaint is that my husband has started using it too. Which I am not that happy about. I have told him I will share many other things with him, but not his skin bacteria.
Thanks for the run through on Martha. I love the Japanese gardens - we had mini mondo grass in our courtyard in our Melbourne home - it is so low maintenance, it was in the grid dividing up the pavers. Looked very lush and you could walk on it a lot and it wasn't bothered by it. Highly recommend it.
I love the new blue and white china range... if only we had it here! xx

    1. I think I overdid mine then I got loads of milia and now I only use it once a week and no more milia. You're lucky it suits you so well. Funny how guys do that - Mr CSW uses my Ojon hair stuff. I wish I had enough space for it - I might fit in a few weeds and then my light well would be done! Martha's plates are good value too! xx

    2. I thought it would be safe from him as it's pink, but that doesn't seem to concern him at all! Men can be quite vain at times....

    3. Hehe - Men are just so darn vain. I am always waiting for him to leave the house!!

*directed at Mr CSW as he reads the comments*
Sorry babes, but you know it's true.x

    4. Hilarious - Hi Mr CSW....!

My husband has yet to read a single blog post I've written. I told him I never mention him in posts at all....

    5. He might not read this one because he hates the magazine stuff. He actually said to me this morning at breakkie that the latest post was soooooo boring. I used to test him to see if he read my post because he ends up being the very few people who have. I'd be like - you read it? so what was it about then? But if he does read it - he only likes the comments bit and rarely the post itself!

Mr AV needs to read the bits about the reno when it's all done because I am sure he will love it! x

  7. I have this issue and my favourite article was the omelette tutorial! Very well done!
A good friend of mine lives in Charleston all winter, in fact she already left, she just loves it there. The house she bought is to die for you would love it!

    1. Mind you she makes so many things look good - even an omelette. Mind you some chives and it does look very pretty. I adore Charleston. I was just blown away by the place and want to do a sabbatical there so bad...

  8. She certainly knows how to cram a lot in! Martha would have a breakdown if she had to spend a day with me. I think the Clarisonic is a waste of money. It's just another beauty con. Mine now sports cobwebs. If you use it to remove make-up from your hand you realise what a poor job it does.

    1. No cramming Sulky - organizing! To be fair Clarisonic is a exfoliator cleanser apparently. You are supposed to double cleanse doncha know? Once to skim the top and then once to pull stuff from the pores. I can't even do my beauty routine properly lately.

    2. Yep, done all that, watched the instructions and it still fails! These whiskers don't lie. Ha - maybe that's the problem, the whiskers!

    3. I think you need what pepe le pew used...

  9. Martha's calendar is seriously something a serial killer would have. Too detailed, organised and flawless. I'd love to do the flour-less cake! That's funny, Mr CSW uses your Ojon. I'm using Mr Tattler's shaving cream coz I always run out. Haha.
What's that show again on Sat am on BBC? They always hold omelette-making contests for chefs and guests. I like that challenge.
The china's beautiful. I wish I have the house and space for that.
    Have a lovely weekend xxx

    1. OMG - I am so relieved I have no serial killer tendencies. But do you use Mr CTT's shaver as well?? They always know. Yes the cooking show always has contests and I do like that show although iffy about James. I think that china goes with any house and space for that! xx

  11. Thanks for sharing the magazine. I have never purchased Living Magazine but I might now, there's a ton of useful information in there. I agree about the Clarisonic - I used to use it daily but then I stopped for about a month while I was testing a new cleanser, and my skin looked better than before (an experience I wrote about here). I am wondering about that sleeping mask - how does one avoid getting it all over the pillows and bed linens?? And I guess "romantic encounters" are out of the question while using it! Also - my husband always uses my shampoo and conditioner!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. TOo funny because last night Mr CSW was like your shampoo smells soooo good! I was like - calm down dude, it's only a shampoo...I do wonder how much more they are using and only admitting to some of the stuff! I think Clarisonic depends on skin. I have thin skin so i have to be careful. Caroline Hirons says it disturbs the skin mantle if that makes sense to you Louise?

  12. I think those pickled green strawberries are a crime against nature!!! I'd try them since I'd try anything once, but come on - the sound of that alone is horrible.:D And Martha's beauty section??? Where did that come from?? Although I do like her style in general and especially those blue and white pants she has on above (I have a similar pair actually:)).

P.S.: I'm saving that flourless cake recipe, I have to make that!!

P.P.S.: I love that you compared renovation and labor in your previous post - I'm definitely not up for either.:D

    1. Seriously, when are you going to eat picked strawberries? That is like post nuclear fall out food. I know Martha is getting older so she has to work for her beauty and the baby boomers are her biggest demographic so looking good is on their minds!

  13. I always wonder how much of the calendar Martha delegates to her cast of thousands. Hard for me to imagine her out in the garage fixing the leaf blowers. :) But really, I do absolutely love Martha. I always get the November issue for her Thanksgiving recipes.

    1. Yes, but she always signs off - she is such a micromanager apparently. So she has let everything touch her fairy dust on the mag! She is so different from me that I am intrigued by her.

  14. I wasn't sure how much Martha was actually Martha - given her employee roll. But then I saw the nativity ornaments she made in prison and I was sold. Now I'm off to make some wire lights!

    Replies
    1. Apparently that prison is now worth a fortune because she redecorated the whole place. The things you can do with dental floss, lemons, and tie dyeing prison bed sheets is underestimated...

  15. Love all the blues and whites. What I am not loving so much is that I signed up to follow you by email and got a confirmed subscription to your blog and then nothing! So I was sad when I checked in and saw how many posts I had missed. I may have to re-follow you if I can't find your emails hanging about in my email account somewhere.

  16. Thanks for this review! I love to make omelettes; we have them about once a week with lots of sauteed veg on the side. Have you seen Julia Child's video about making them from one of her earlier shows? Priceless!

When you visit Charleston, go to Husk and eat anything with bacon in it. Located in one of those charming old houses and worth the trip.

OT, but there is a poem in this week's New Yorker called Shoulda Coulda Woulda! ( I may have messed up the order there)

    1. More than welcome Lane! I do miss Julia - I remember her show when I was a child and giving careful looks to Jacques her cohost. It was so funny. I adore Charleston and I love the food there. Lucky I like bacon! Thanks for heads up - my ipad is so full that i must delete before my new yorker subscription can load up :)

  17. Checking for mineral oil in all my products, whipping up an omelette on blue patterned plates, planning a party so I can use the genius idea of the frozen water balloon cooling system, planning a trip to Charleston ( please join me! ), oh and hard wiring something...TODAY!
I don't get facials either so I get it Aerin...To mince or finely chop that is the question....?

All u need to know really & you presented it so beautiful, sorry Martha I don't think I need to purchase your mag.
    Have a lovely day! Naomi,

  18. Once again - thank you for browsing & reading the magazine for us!
61 ways to simplify our life. Wow. My life is already very simple, heh. Perhaps i should need just the opposite.
Never used the Clarisonic, and first a month ago I had my first " mask " trial.
I am not willing to have a facial, hating the idea of someone rubbing my face, but, I love going to my dentist. Surprising.
Having a body massage is a whole different thing, wishing for one.
    Martha covers about it all.
There seems to be something for everyone :).

    1. I like Martha's magazine because it always varies. You love going to the dentist?? Mind you I love that clean teeth feel right after too. I go through stages of tons of massages then nothing. Have a lovely weekend x

  19. Wow what an action packed issue - a nice combination of health, food, travel and domestic tips. I don't read this magazine but sounds like a good one when I have more time to read.

I'm not sure where I was expecting you to say you'd like to live, but it wasn't Charlestown or New Orleans, but with your descriptive comparison to Bath it sounds appealing!

I'm very selective with what I put on my face now since my perioral dermatitis, I miss my face masks, they used to be so refreshing. Now I just do a facial steam!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! xx

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes I think the clarisonic won't do things in favor of the dermatitis. steam is great - do you add stuff to the water though like rosemary etc? that might be nice to add stuff? I would move to New Orleans tomorrow if I could but probably only for one year or so...ENjoy your Sunday xx

  21. I love Martha. I used to subscribe to her magazine but it made me feel very inadequate which caused me an enormous amount of stress so I had to stop reading it. So thanks for all of this. I've actually made that cake. That's all I can handle from this issue. Now I'm exhausted.

  22. @melo I would love to design a garden as wel..

@Connie I stil am afraid but I find it useful and humorous in equal parts! But I get exhausted just reading it too :)
