Mad Men Season 6 Episode 5 - The Flood

As Magnus Magnusson said, I started so I shall finish.

Mad Men this season is a little off piste no?

I have not found my footing this season, have you?

Tearing wallpaper and trying to hide it with one's bed.
Psychotherapy 101 just won't cut it.
Where is a proper medical professional?

Poor kid must have some sort of anxiety issue otherwise if it had no meaning then they wouldn't have started with it right? Mind you the kids has a narcissist of a mother, a sap for a stepfather, weak and ever egotistical and confused stepmother and a vacant and absent father.

The thing is while I feel sorry for him, I haven't bonded with him enough to really care and I think Don probably feels about him the same way I do if his speech to Megan is anything to go by.

Mad Men seems to be full of people standing by the window looking out into the city scape on which they want to conquer.  Normally it's Don, Roger, or Pete but it was finally Peggy's turn.

It coincides with her first potential apartment purchase.  She's making an offer the seller it turns out can refuse.   She might buy in the west 80's which is viewed as a frontier.  Makes me laugh because when I lived in New York, the frontier was Brooklyn.   This scenario now is rather more frequent and there are advice columns one can turn to but I do wonder who she would have turned to to ask how to deal with buying an apartment for her partner to live in who is not financially pitching in?  I found it interesting that she was doing what women tend to do quite frequently which is diminish this milestone as was seen when talking about it with Megan at the awards ceremony..

That guy from LA Law was with Peggy.
I thought I was in Los Angeles in the 80's but had to remind Scottie to beam me back to New York in the 60's.

Michael's blind date was so sweet and a scene right out of Woody Allen.
What a charmer and great conversationalist.
"You like kids? I have never had sex. Why did I order soup?"

Joan with glasses.
Totes amaze.

Dr King is killed.

The event brings everyone together.

The news was delivered in a very Greek tragic way -
a messenger yells during the advertising awards ceremony.
Megan wins an award but this seems secondary considering the events. Poor thing once again, the limelight just escapes her.

Don forgets his gripe with Peggy and gives her a lift.

Pete Campbell rings his wife Trudie to see if she is ok.
When did he become so civically minded?

But the Flood which is the title of the show is justified.

There is a flood of tears and emotion.  Things are going to be swept and washed away. We are waiting to see what shall remain intact after the "flood". There were references to this during Ginsberg's father telling him that in Noah's Ark, a man and a woman should be together and even the animals went in pairs.  The movie "Planet of the Apes" with the imagery of the destruction of New York was shown which was surely not a screen filler.

While I find the people's lives affected by this interesting, Mad Men should be careful not to be a factual history show.  It is social history and remember that is what made it captivating.  We already know what happened to Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy but we don't know what is going to happen to Don, Peggy and SCDP.

But I suppose the assasination of MLK is a parallel to what we had experienced when Princess Diana suddenly died.  I was in London at the time and people were shocked to the core.  For about a fortnight, everyone was nicer and gentler and people took the week off work in unofficial mourning.

This hug quite summed up the mood of the nation didn't it.
Uncomfortable consoling and awkward commiseration.

I love how Roger takes everything in his stride.

What a disastrous but hilarious meeting - I like talking about the moon and the stars but just in the company of really close friends and even then they look at me weird.
Randall is genius and I hope he stays around.
I love how he wanted to speak but without words and
Roger had to remind him that it never works!
But Roger just brushes it off and tells Don that Randall talked him off a roof once so he felt like he owed him.

Does anyone else feel like this is starting to feel like a stale relationship past its expiry date but you are sticking around for old times sake?  Sure there is that glimmer of why you started dating in the first place but ...
I am a loyal gal but I wouldn't be surprised if
I may be all alone here next week.

  2. You know what I'm going to say don't you! Still haven't watched it, but given your reviews and the compliments you get about your reviews, it really does sound like I'm missing out, but I couldn't possibly fit in another TV series in to my life right now.

Have a great bank holiday weekend anyway babes - it's supposed to be nice and sunny xx

  4. I'm feeling slightly the same way... I did enjoy this weeks a bit more, but overall the mood is very grim in general. Emotionally heavy. I just want things to lighten up a bit.
You're right about Don's son (what is his name even?). I've never had a connection with that character unlike Sally, he's never really been developed.
Wish they'd get Betty out of the fat suit - her face doesn't move properly for starters. xx

    1. Yes - I agree - if Betty is going to be an annoying character - at least make her look great and dress her up like they used to!! And touche - don't even know the kids name! then I realized even he has a baby brother...xx

    1. The hype was truly deserved but right now it is riding on its own coattails but if you feel like vegging out one weekend - do get a box set from the beginning. This season is an exception but it really was an amazing show.

  7. It's a big yawn! And Megan sure is bugging me, I just find her irritating, is that the intention? AND it's very depressing and the characters are not connecting with each other which at one time was the thrill. I HATE Pete Campbell, totally unbelievable that he would be upset about the death of MLK. We're not getting enough Roger, that's for certain. And Betty needs to be blonde, I want the old Betty back, the one who shot down birds in her backyard in her dressing gown!

    1. Megan is so unlikable that I am glad Don is cheating on her. You are right - there is no connection and they are not a team like they used to be. Everyone is soo self-involved! Where is the growth? The only one growing is Peggy but the rest is still stuck in the 50's. I want that Betty back as well!

  10. Your reviews are definitely more illuminating than most......

We never got into MM because we were working in Manhattan at the time and it was Truly Depressing to see how many mourned that Life wasn't like that anymore. You'll guess that the mourners were male ;)
