Elle Decor June 2013 Issue

So here is something for the weekend for you to browse through.

This month's issue is slick.

It has great architectural features, styling and superb photography.

I adore this room in every way but I do wonder if there is a misfit in the household because there is a chair on the right facing the wall.

I want to try and recreate this bedroom if
I get a bedroom layout like this. I adore the draped walls and
that specific treatment on the drapes.

The following flat was decorated by Todd Alexander Romano.
He is so dapper, like his home.
I get tempted to paint rooms gloss but as mentioned in a previous post, my builder flat out refuses gloss finish.
The gloss finish reminds me of Asian enameled and lacquered storage boxes.
Grey and yellow is different but I can't see those curtains lasting more than a few months tops.

I can feel the power and panache of a proper New Yorker
in this editorial.

John Saladino works his magic on this flat.

I think even in a home that has neutral palette,
it is nice to have on punchy room to offset the calm.
Isn't the photography and light streaming through the windows like a Vermeer painting?

This is one of those fantastic North American houses with such space that could house about 10 normal British ones.

I am a big fan of Mica Ertegun.
She is the one who wrote about decanting dish washing liquids to offset a brand by the kitchen sink.
I have a lot of time for her and I tried to enlarge the article to the maximum for you to read.

This is for Jenny at The Lime Walk who is deciding
between wood or tile!

I had bone inlaid furniture fatigue.  Now I must specify my personal definition of fatigue. It is something I love but then it becomes so ubiquitous that I become "over it". But you always come back to it.  I now decided I need something bone-y again.

There was a great article about choosing and working with an interior designer.  It highlighted and broke some myths about working with them.

Below is my favourite editorial of the whole issue.

I loved its use of color and the balance between classic design
and theatrical decor touches.

The balance of the red carpets and the ceiling with all the colors in between is so finely tuned.
I could easily live in this bedroom and I love the tassled fringe on the chaise longue.
In an ideal world, I would decorate my room like this but of course you would get lattice fatigue!

Hope you enjoyed the issue and have a lovely weekend!

  1. Love Elle Decor - I get Arch Digest though, and should cancel as I find mostly I hate the houses they feature. I signed up when Margaret Russel went over from Elle. Mistake. It's definitely improved under her, but frankly I mostly look at the featured houses and cringe at the excessive consumption the owners indulge in, and the excessively over decorated looks that are very fashionable, and will no doubt be thrown out in their entirety by the owners in 5 years time. I love lacquered walls too - you should definitely do them! Find a painter and decorator that specialises in them - the House and Garden directory will probably list someone. xx

    1. Margaret Russel is a funny one. Like you said, she has improved it in a way but now it has become so over the top. I still have my subscription but to be honest it isn't very inspiring bc half the time it looks like a lottery winner just hired someone to build their dream house! But you are right, I should find someone, I am also tempted to tadelakt a loo! xx

  3. I just browsed through Elle Decor ( your post ), will go back to the start and look at it more closely.
I just wished to write, that it is great, that you are doing this all. No expenses for me ( magazines ).
I really like the John Saladino´s work.
To " create " a room with one focus point and placing everything else to compliment it. I use that technique myself too ( hah, believe it or not ).
I also prefer few, large and loosely placed articles; furniture needs to be drawn away from the walls, imo.
Now I´ll return to the start. I´ll just have to get my magnifying glass ; ).
    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Read it on your ipad if you have one and then you can enlarge it! Yes, I have all these subscriptions so might as well share right? I will do a Martha Stewart one next week for you to browse through as well :)

  4. I've taken absolute ages reading through this post... especially the paragraphs on working with decorators. I also have a 'thing' for high gloss walls - I reckon your builder refuses because he doesn't know how to do them!!. I would imagine that the paint (high gloss) gets sprayed on? I am considering having high-gloss two-pac on my pantry's cupboards!! xx

    1. The article about interior decorators was interesting though wasn't it? Although the whole, they are like your shrink thing was one of those quips that don't even make sense. Apparently with high gloss it is so unforgiving and you are forever filling in the wall for imperfections as the light bounces off of it so one wall can take ages! Can't wait to see your cupboards Jenny! xx

  6. I loved reading this, Naomi! Then I was attacked by a fit of "the guilts" for not making my lazy kitten-ass be more industrious re my own home decoration efforts. I might dip my paws in gloss and cover one wall with paw prints. I really love that little family room - the furniture looks so plumptious and comfy and the colours are great.

    1. I loved that colorful room as well - I loved how it had color everywhere but for some reason had the effect of a neutral room. So hard to do!!

    1. I wish we had the light for more color but the minute you put a color on the walls, the light mutates somehow!

  10. My taste changes all the time, which probably explains why my house is a little eclectic on the decorating front. Under normal circumstances I'm a contemporary girl ( I love a gloss in the kitchen), but I always find myself being drawn to some of the design features in your interior design posts that I would never have really considered previously - I'm loving those lime green chairs, not sure where I#'d put them though!!

    1. Me too! What I like yesterday is even different from today. I love gloss in a kitchen as well though I think it is about being "clean". You can put those lime green shoes next to your yellow shoes in your walkin closet! xx

  16. This post made me feel weak at the knees, mainly because everything is so perfectly beautiful and my house looks like the wreckers have been at it; not quite! It's only the bathroom which is in a bad way. It is taking forever to get the bathroom flooding damage fixed.

    1. Good luck on getting the flood damage fixed. I know it can be a pain but better to do it properly rather than a quick botch up job!

  18. I can't seem to find my copy of Elle Decor underneath the pile of Dwells and National Geographics begging to be read. I'll get to it eventually but now you've saved me the trouble. Love the rooms with the whitewashed walls.

  19. That mirror more from the Hamptons house is my favorite piece.:) And that article about working with interior designer was much needed, because I'm a total control freak and I want to do everything by myself (even though I don't necessarily think I do it the best!:)) but sometimes you need somebody to guide you. And have fun with.:)

    1. You know if you are going to buy medium range stuff then it is worth finding an interior designer who can find you more choices that are not available in stores and trade only plus if yuo have a good relationship with them - they can pass on their discount to you!
