We all have a crush.
Mind you it may not be all consuming,
it may only be one of those dinner party questions.
But I have had a crush on someone who I thought was completely normal and popular but at a dinner party I was made to realise that perhaps it was an odd crush to have.
Mine is King Charles II.

Not this one.

Mind you I did say King so there was no real need to clarify...

He wasn't the aesthetic ideal of his time -
his looks were largely unappreciated.
He was considered a mongrel with his Danish and French blood
but I think he was rather gorgeous.
Round, deep set eyes, aquiline nose, full bow shaped lips.
Totally hot.
He was the ultimate balance between posh and rugged.
He was the mix of learned, curious, anti-establishment and stalwart of tradition all at once.
He was the mix of learned, curious, anti-establishment and stalwart of tradition all at once.
He was born a prince and died a king but he is probably one of the only British monarchs to have experience poverty and life as a civilian. That makes him all the more textured and interesting.

I must have watched this at least ten times.
But if you think that is weird,
one of my friends still likes Tom Cruise - even after this episode!

Another one of my friends thinks Willem Dafoe is sexy.
And she hasn't even met him - purely on his, ahem, looks..?

Crushes can be a funny thing because now it is legitimate to fancy Ben Affleck again but for awhile it wasn't.
Especially after he dated Jenny from the block and those movies.
So tell me, who is your "weirdest" crush?
Especially after he dated Jenny from the block and those movies.
Brad Pitt used to be considered normal to fancy but after this...
Well, Angelina doesn't need to be worried anymore does she.
So tell me, who is your "weirdest" crush?
At least Charles the second was fun loving!
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to be a guest at one of his parties. I would have barely managed to be a groupie though...
ReplyDeleteWeird - Anthony Hopkins...sir Anthony to you...
ReplyDeleteNOT weird at all - Johnny Depp. My friends think he is "dirty" looking...
Actual TOTAL crush of all time - Peter ( my husband ). Sad thing these days is that might be the "weirdest" of all...
That's really lovely!
DeleteThe husband bit is lovely - not the Sir Anthony Hopkins bit! hehe,I saw him once and I swear his stare was just like Hannibal. Faaareeeeaaked me out!
DeleteI think like Charles the 2ends father you have lost your head on this one lol I think to have a crush on someone you do not know is pretty difficult. I think crush' s are often fantasy of what you think they are like and how your relationship would work. I did enjoy your crush however and yes it is a long way off the Boring brad Pitt or johnny depp examples. Here is a question are females more likely to have a crush than males? If yes, are they the same? Basically are crush' s the same?
ReplyDeleteInteresting Lee - I haven't had a crush on someone I know since high school...Funnily enough I think men crush much more than women but that women take their crushes more seriously when they happen. But psychologically speaking, crushes must be a loaded subject! I might do some reading on the issue, I like your perspective on it!
DeleteBrad's never really done it for me, I have to say. I'm not sure I have a crush on anyone. How dull am I? Usually someone does one movie, and the next one puts me off them. I can't believe that you have a friend who still loves Tom Cruise??! I quite like that freckly guy who fronted the Burberry campaign and starred in Birdsong, My week with Marilyn and Les Mis. Can't remember his name... Freddy something? Although on an intellectual level I have no idea if I'd actually feel the magic in his presence... I should probably think up someone more intellectually superior than an actor. You know, like a nobel prize winner or something...! xx
ReplyDeleteEddie Redmayne! That is hilarious you mention that bc a neighbour of mine sat next to him a few weeks ago at a restaurant and she likes him too and she was like - oh he was so cute. And all the rest of us were like - huh? who? not the guy in birdsong? that one? So yes, you have qualified for having a weird crush!! But Brad peaked in Legends of the Fall. then it just went downhill...xx
DeleteOh no, legends of the fall was the worst movie ever. I remember walking out of it saying it was the worst movie I'd ever seen and was 3 hours too long. Then I saw "Showgirls" which has forever usurped it and any other bad movie I'll ever see in my lifetime.
DeleteYes! Eddie Redmayne. There's something about his freckles and little squinty eyes.....
Brad's hair in Legends of the Fall should have gotten Oscar for best supporting actor. It really was like a badly made Hallmark movie wasn't it? I personally don't think he is a good actor at all! If I see ever Eddie around, I will give him your blog address ok? :)
DeleteOh Heidi, I just realized that it came across that I was being genuine about him peaking in LOTF! Oh no not at all! My irony wasn't strong enough hehe
DeleteIt must be the wild hair! ;)
ReplyDeleteActually I can't bear his hair - he looks like a heavy metal band member from the 80's. Failed Motley Crue. But I adore his dual nature and that he was so complicated...! xx
DeleteWell you've already covered one of mine - Rufus Sewell as Charles II is my idea of a fantasy man. Him, and Alan Rickmam. That voice...
ReplyDeleteUh oh, I have competition? You take Alan Rickman and I will take Rufus. But seriously, Alan Rickman? That is hilarious!! Never heard of that one ;)
DeleteRufus Sewell - mmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteI have a strange crush on John Malkovich. And Malcolm Turnbull. There is no logic in either of these crushes at all, although I admire Malcolm's intellect, if not his political choices.
John? Malcolm Turnbull? This is so entertaining, I love it! I have heard the John thing before, I think it was his superb acting and his gravitas right? Malcolm must just be one of those pheremone-y explanations! But for a politico - he is rather cute ;)
DeleteSee? This is why you are so fabulous. Right here. What a perfect post for a Monday morning! And yes, you win. I don't think I have any current active crushes...I had to dig around and mine definitely qualifies: Ciaran Hinds. Yep. And so I totally understand the Alan Rickman vote...a voice can lead me a long way. John Malkovich might qualify because holy cow he absolutely burns charisma in person, so much so that people would turn to look at him BEFORE he would come into a room...
ReplyDeleteAs for Johnny Depp? I actually have a soft spot for him in my heart because of several phone conversations I had with him a LONG time ago (gosh, twenty years? Nearly) when I was working in a luxury hotel in NYC--his interests were all over the map--Cocteau, Shakespeare, Paris--very interesting and he sent a huge lovely bouquet to all of the phone ladies when he left. A lovely gesture.
Ciaran Hinds. Actually, I can see it. Imagine having a guinnes with him in an Irish pub by the coast in County Kerry and he is telling you how hard he finds his craft...
DeleteI am not into voices though pre-PR trained and Man U football player Beckham had a horrid one which will prevent me from ever fancying him.
Johnny Depp was someone I had a huge crush on in high school - 21 jump street baby. Who knew he was a sulky curious artiste? But he is tres charmant by being so lovely! I would love to read transcripts of your conversations with him! ;)
Ha, ha, fantastic! I think yours is the best crush ever!
ReplyDeleteI never really 'got' Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp. Fancying them always seemed so like following the herd.
My crush was always the playwright Arthur Miller. I think it was the intellect that got me.
x
Yes Arthur - the thinking woman's crumpet! Mind you I think he had some Sufi-esque hypnotic quality about him - even Marilyn Monroe fell under his spell! x
DeleteThe one I don't like to talk about? I think Chad Kroeger from Nickleback is sexy. It makes me feel terrible about myself! ;-) I like that you like king charles II!
ReplyDeleteI will be honest and say I had to actually google his face again bc I just couldn't remember him...You know what, I kinda get it - rocker but not crazy rock n roll, I always like that one coined term "LA is Nashville with a tan!"
DeleteHe seems like he would be deep and after you were done with him, he would write a song about you and the song would be playing on the radio and you'd be all - gosh Chad, get over it!
Wow... perfect post to start a new week!!!!
ReplyDeleteBrad forever!!!!!!!!
xoxo
You seem like a loyal gal - only time I thought he was cute was in Thelma and Louise and his hair was unbelievably gorgeous in Legends of the Fall! You still might get a medal for weird crush though!!
DeleteI must say that Brad Pitt is kind of my style ;-)
ReplyDeletexoxo
I can see you and him together funny enough! You two would make a cute couple :) xx
DeleteI have had a crush on Richard Gere. Nothing weird about that at the time.
ReplyDeleteBut, from the times of American Gigolo, he has turned a bit weird..
Or, is this once again something I don´t understand; )?
OH me too! Love him, he's still gorgeous although he was on Graham Norton recently and acted really oddly. Not zen Buddhist at all! But yes I think you may be referring to the rumours since then right??
DeleteRight! But tell me - in what way oddly did he behave recently??
Deletewell you already know. I love Michael Jackson I find him sexy since the age of 3 and weirder... I fell in love watching thriller (the part when he's a monster). So I dunno or me it's like normal, but people are like WTF ?
ReplyDeleteActually, you are the winner of weirdest crush Melo! :)
DeleteWell, I totally see how you can have a crush on Charles. He's just so sensual looking..Rufus is pretty hot too. I have to admit my biggest crush is on Colin Firth, but that's not very unusual. I do think Alan Rickman is strangely attractive..and I guess I'm not alone!
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about Brad. That Chanel ad really blew it for him and Chanel..
Chanel and Brad committed a double suicide with that one Kim! I need to listen to Alan's voice again!!x
DeleteI had to do some googeling - why would a king live in poverty? His father was executed and he was exiled. And my world makes sense again.:) Out of all of your crushes, he's definitely the most appealing!
ReplyDeleteHow about girl crushes, babe??:)
The weeding of the weak doesn't work, it's an urban legend. It has to be!
DeleteI don't do girl crushes. I think certain women are smart and beautiful and I think they would be fun to have lunch with if that counts? I think Monica Bellucci is stunning but I don't know if I want to have lunch with her...I would love to get drunk with Virginia Wolf, drop acid with Emily Dickinson so I think each person serves their purpose!( PS I don't and never have dropped acid but with her I would!)
DeleteAlec baldwin, Raiph Feines sp
ReplyDelete;) robyn
I funnily understand both! Although I lived near him in NY and he was always so sulky but then again people who shop at health food shops tend to ;)
DeleteAhhh, I've missed reading your posts! We lost internet for most of the week...can you believe? Anyway, I have lots of catching up on your blog to do! Is it super lame to say that I haven't really crushed on any celebrities...just random people walking down the street instead? I guess that isn't allowed anymore since I'm married now.
ReplyDeleteBut one time I was driving and saw a cute guy driving a truck out of the corner of my eye. Made me giggle when I realized it WAS my husband. Ha!
Oh Danie, that is sooooo cute! He must have gotten a kick out of that no? But it is funny bc if I say a guy at a restaurant is cute to my husband he gets jealous but he doesn't mind if I think a celebrity is cute ;)
DeleteI have thing for Tom Hiddleston..
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think I have got any weird crushes
DeleteMads Mikkelson. Specifically, Hannibal from the American series. Oh, what is wrong with me?? WHAT. HAPPENED. TO. ME.
ReplyDelete
