US Vogue January 2014 Review Part 1

Cate Blanchett's publicity team is orchestrating all
the right moves for an Oscar win.
Good timing although a February cover would have been better.
The cover is not too smug nor theatrical and
she has a nice neutral thespian at rest expression.

No prizes for guessing that Kaiser Karl has been flicking through
his Frida Kahlo coffee table books.
Not sure that the mustache trend will gain any momentum.

Donatella must love this!
(Of course she did - she probably came up with the idea.)
She looks like her younger sister.
Although Versace on Lady Gaga looks so demure.

I know Marc is a diffusion line but still...
This reminds of when Dolly Parton said -
it costs a lot of money to look this cheap.

Linda still looks amazing.
She doesn't need the money though I still think she got a terrible deal with the whole paternity lawsuit.
I know she gets a lot of money per month but it is all relative and
I have completely lost respect for Pinault.
I think this is the supermodel way of being back on the pull.
Do an ad.

Have you heard that Christian Dior is funding a 5 year restoration of the  Marie Antoinette's fake village at Versailles Palace?

Dior have come up with a special collection to commemorate this.

I just love this dress on this actress.
I wish Vogue would do more pretty and wearable dresses like this.

I gotta say nothing really made me look twice here.

I don't know if the Mayr clinic needs to be afraid but apparently this is the new detox vacation.
But its location in Bolivia despite its beauty might not be
 the easy pop over jaunt.

It's not a good sign when a Vogue editorial
 is almost funny is it?
"Razor's edge" is quite suited to this fashion spread.
It looks like she is deranged and
cut her own hair in an episode of hysteria.
Also, that pose is just so riduculous.
The crazy person's thinking pose a la Rodin.

She sure is crazy because she is tying a sweater over her coat but pairing it with no matter how much Vogue tries and
convince us we will not be wearing those sandals even if they are 90% off on Net a Porter.

"Hey doctor, I only took of your white coat because
I think it looks better on me."

Yep, the Prozac is kicking in!

I still don't like those sandals but I do like that Burberry coat a lot.
Not as trendy as a pink coat but
a cheerful dose of color in the winter.

Part 2 tomorrow folks.

  2. I think I spent 5 minutes looking at my Vogue this month and you have illustrated the reasons why!

    1. It really was not inspiring at all...I rarely go through the magazine more than twice.

  3. Hilarious!
I love this: " the supermodel way of being back on the pull."
For me it would be regularly washing my hair and changing out of my baggy assed sweats.

    1. They rarely get picked up at bars by civilians do they!

  4. Wouldn't that be great if the mustache look was "in"?! Maybe then I could afford a sock shown in Vogue. Now if they had just put socks with those sandals....

  5. Do you write your blog posts in iambic pentameter??? :)
Linda prolly is back on the pull- there are standards to maintained.
Lovely to see HRH Cate on the cover, she is magnificent.
    Julianne Moore is divine. Always.

    1. I wish I could write in iambic pentameter! Linda has always chosen alpha men so I reckon the next one should be an oligarch! Cate really is more HRH than the real ones for sure.

  6. Hilarious! Agree about MJ blue suit - satin is the hardest fabric of all to wear isn't is? I had a pink satin jacket and people always looked at me askance in it. Love the Cates all of them with a c and a K. Now I've read the lastest Vanity Fair I feel a bit queasy about Woody Allen who has always been my fave. And a lovely thank you for the leather puppy posh tag - I think I must have walked past you most days when we lived in that area, often to pick up my kids at Ravenstone House, an old cemetery turned pre-school, They had mercifully exhumed the bodies.....

    1. Satin was made for statues bc minute you move you crease it! I haven't gone thru VF yet...must say it just doesn't pack a punch like it used to and can't believe gwynetg scared them that much? You must know more re that situation? Glad it got there safely!

  7. For once you are writing when I have already read the current US Vogue (the tyranny of distance), so this was like comparing notes, and yours were hilarious! And I noted Linda's return to modelling too. Hopefully I'll grow up to look like her when I'm in my 40's.
Off to order a pair of the ugly clumpy sandals right now. Clearly they are the next Big Thing. I did enjoy Cate's interview. But my overall impression was how thin the magazine was. It was the anorexic cousin to the obese September issue xx

    1. I hadn't had the time so perhaps it's good to do it a little later so we all can compare notes! iPad comes much quicker you see. Linda is just amazing looking. Must say I love how women genuinely look good not just for their age but look good period! I know you're a shoe girl but even they won't be able to sell them at their staff sales! But it got 4 pics! So suss!! Xx

  9. Hahahahaha, LOVE this post! I read the Cate article but have left most of the rest of this magazine behind. I deeply hated those looks on the model with the big clunky sandals (so awful) and that insane hair. I'm telling you, the Vogue Paris this month feels like the most glamorous magazine in the world compared to this month's American Vogue (I don't include the Cate feature in that assessment of course). Do stop by in a day or so, I'm doing a mini-review of Vogue Paris and it's always fun finding out what you think! XO, Jill

    1. I just don't know what is going on with VOgue! I do agree that at least the European Vogues seem to be fashion forward and avantgarde where as it should be the mothership that leads the way. I look forward to see it - maybe I should switch too then? xx

  10. The Aussie Vogue is so bland compared to the US version. I thought the same thing when I saw that Chanel ad. Hope the trend doesn't take off- bc I am blond, and I don't want to have to go to the trouble of dying my moustache! You are spot on with the crazy model. I didn't realise she was tying her jumper up- I thought she was wearing a straight jacket.

    1. I havent seen Aussie Vogue in a while but the US version gets pumped with so much money and yet I don't understand these editorials?? I wish they just used a proper straight jacket because all that buckle detail would have been more interesting...

  11. Ha! I love your take on the issue.

  12. So funny.. and I laughed out loud with your comments about the crazy person! Those sandals, the hair, and she DOES look like she taking happy pills. I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga and I'm not really sure what she looks like because she is always trying to be someone else.

    Great review;)

  13. Missed your magazine reviews! This is great and you are spot-on about everything here. Especially that awful editorial where the gal has nut case hair and looks like the sweater over coat is a straight jacket. Who thought of that? Agree about the shoes. They are hideous.

Best part of this issue was that striped dress and Lupita Nyong'o!

    1. December is always a dry month for mags - people just seem to go too holiday centric and all the mags were a bit boring but I will be back on track - but I do pin images from the mags on my pinterest board even if I don't do a review so you can always have a browse there Kim. Honestly who they heck did that hair????? I adore this new star Lupita - she is soo elegant and easy on the eye. xx

  15. I just don't like US Vogue. Codswallop and Wiggy Wintour have lost the plot.
You'd think some new blood over there would be a credible idea by now.

But I do enjoy the Condé Nast Worldwide Newsstand in Hanover Square.
    So much choice!

    1. Lately I am finding it rather poor and uninspiring but I can't help but buy it just in case Grace does something amazing! I love that store too - one of the few places that has all the different country editions of Vogue living!!

  16. Just realised from your newest post that there was a part 1 that I had missed. Do you know I haven't picked up a Vogue since October, but it doesn't look like I'm missing much. Yes I agree Vogue, we want to see more of the wearable and accessible stuff with the editorial for good measure as well of course. Those shoes are hideous, you're right, but I've seen them on a few high fashion Instagram feeds too - shoot me if you ever catch me wearing them! have a good weekend xx

  17. Firstly, Happy New Year, a little belated but I've been away and I'm only just catching up. Interesting about the Marie Antoinette project - sounds like an ambitious make-over. The black and white striped dress is fabulous but those sandals are just so unattractive and I can't imagine how anyone could manage to walk in them. They look so heavy and clumsy.

  18. Garrgh! just wanted to comment above. Gold Cate is a winner. I am a huge fan of gold frocks esp in that soft creamy gold colour. I have the same aversion to ball frock on the mama and overdressed kids on the tennis court, such a cliche as to be bit suburban even...

    1. Yay! So I am not alone - I was afraid some people might take it the wrong way but how many times can you do that same thing over and over again!!

  19. I am late to commenting on this one - when I saw the copy of this month's Vogue, I was tempted to buy it because I am a fan of Cate Blanchett, but then I saw how thin it was! Then I flipped though and wasn't impressed by a single thing I saw. I sometimes feel like Vogue's magazine concept is getting tired and is in need of an overhaul.

  20. You are so funny and a wonderful writer! Loved your part II review. The photo bomb.. Goth.. what ever happened to just classy, elegant, simple beauty?

I've got you on my blog roll and I thought I was following you on google but I noticed I wasn't there .. so I added myself. Also getting your posts in my in-box. Hopefully with all this I should be able to follow along;) My work schedule sometimes gets in the way of blogging/socializing so if I miss anything ..it's usually work related.

    Have a nice weekend! L.

  21. @Louise - it was a thing issue but I suppose they knew they were going to take a break in December and they didn't want to make any last minute changes or addition before it went to publication? Yes I can't believe that I think Vogue is getting a bit tired indeed and it needs a makeover itself!!

@Leslie - I am not funny - Vogue is! Who knew? Of course, blogging is a great fun hobby and thank you so much for reading but I would take me off something otherwise I will bombard you!! ;)
