HRH Kate and her roots (not ancestry but her hair)

 Completely last minute post here!

The Duchess of Cambridge met members of the Poppy Girls, daughters of military personnel who are releasing a charity song in aid of the British Royal Legion, today at Kensington Palace
Via
This isn't a love her or hate her post, I am actually on the fence about her but I do try and show some respect to the crown.
But this isn't necessarily about her but her roots.
Not about her mining / French Hugeonot roots;
 I mean her hair.

As you may have seen depending on which country you are in, Wills and Kate made a quick visit to their local tube station today and she was pictured with her latest hairstyle.

Looks like she called in her hairdresser but only for a blow dry and not to touch up her roots.

Kate looked radiant in a calf-length red coat from LK Bennett, happy to let a few grey hairs show at the roots - perhaps she's been too busy with George to get to the hairdresser?

Now I haven't forgotten she gave birth a few months ago.

I am not a mother but I can only imagine how little sleep she is getting even if she has a nanny because I am sure that a mother's instinct to look out for a baby is overwhelming.

But for some reason, I was a little disappointed and almost sad.
(Only being honest...)

I guess I do expect certain people always to look groomed and polished.  I just didn't realize she was one of those people I had any expectations of.

I myself am in dire need of a haircut but just can't face making chit chat with my hairdresser but then again I am a civilian.
But does she have a duty to always look good?

Am I being unrealistic or am I just afraid she might fall into that slippery slope of becoming "mumsy" which she is entitled to do as she is a mother now.

Or have I just gotten used to this postmodern phenomenon of women giving birth and doing a photoshoot days after?

I don't actually have a definitive opinion on this which is odd for me!   I guess I am just thinking out loud...

Would be interested to know your thoughts on this...

  1. No, I thought that too but I don't know the ins and outs of breastfeeding and chemicals, maybe she's putting baby first?
She does look worn out and that's with a nanny, phew.

    1. I'm guessing she even has multiple nannies lol

    2. I think she does as well plus I am sure her mum helps which is natural but I am surprised because other women react to it like they had a bit of a procedure but she is really showing the signs of a new mum...but yes perhaps it's about the health and worry about dyes.

    3. I am with others - I assume she may be breastfeeding, even now and then (perhaps supplementing with a bottle) and I would never have coloured my hair whilst doing that.

She is still lovely to me !

  2. I wonder if it has something to do with chemicals in dye and breast feeding etc-? not sure if that's an issue- She's someone who's style I usually really admire - her polished not-a-slave-to trends look is a refreshing change from logo clad reality stars we're bombarded with in the US- but then again England is hat capital of the world so maybe a nice chapeau would have been an option?

  3. Good point Christina! That would have been a nice way to introduce a fashion element and detract from not just her hair but overall tiredness. Hats are uplifting for sure!

  4. Interesting. I agree she kind of has an obligation to look good, which she does: I mean she is beautiful. I'd love to say how baaaad she has roots but then I always put off getting my hair done! It's so boring sitting there for 3 hours... Esp when you have a gorgeous new babe! Still she has undeniable support so...I'm undecided and sitting on the fence! Interesting debate 👏x

    1. Well I am really bad at keeping regular hair appointments but then again I am not going on public appointments on behalf of the crown but perhaps it is a health issue although there have been times in the past where she has shown her roots as well...But I was actually surprised at my initial reaction to the pictures! PS how on earth do you get those cute images?

    2. I'd be really surprised if it was health related, I mean she could use henna, or some other non chemical touch up?? I think she most likely didn't notice the roots as outside light/camera flash way more harsh and shows flaws..anyway I loved this debate!! V clever xxx

  5. Interesting question. She doesn't strike me as the type to let her look go mumsy so I'm guessing it's the chemicals. Maybe life in the palace isn't all it's cracked up to be. Yes, wonder why she didn't think of a hat? Maybe she's too exhausted to care.

    1. Yes especially as since she's given birth she's rarely seen doing appointments and she surely must be nearing with help into a new home equipped with help of all kinds. It will be interesting to see motherhood and how it moulds her.

  6. I think it's great that she's not succumbing to the terrible pressure we put upon ourselves. I only wish more women in the public eye would stop the hair colouring/face injecting/spray tanning.
It's so rare to see a women without her mask that I think we risk forgetting how 'real' looks.
My daughter, who is 12, often comments on how unfair it seems that women seem to spend so much time and money changing the way they look. She also comments on how beautiful old women are. When quizzed she said its because they look natural. I was so happy to hear that!
    Interesting conversation!

    1. I think it's quite interesting to see but like I said above I was surprised to see my reaction to it. I was thinking that now within a month people look like they never gave birth. As it is she has already lost all her baby weight which for a few months is amazing as it is but I think standards have changed without us realising and we just expect motherhood not to get in the way of anything anymore even though it's a huge life event!

      Delete
    2. Our reactions are interesting, aren't they. I find it intriguing that we put so much pressure on women, especially those in the public eye, to keep themselves looking a certain way. We like to think we have more freedom these days, but perhaps in reality that 'freedom' is really just another form of repression. Just my musings...!
Regarding her weight, some women don't keep weight on no matter what. It looks as if she's pretty tired and run down. I was very thin after the birth of my children, through no effort on my part. Just breastfeeding and metabolism I guess. It wasn't a very healthy time, just exhausting and relentless - my kids were up every hour or so for a feed until they were well over one!

      Delete
    3. Ruth I was thinking the same thing, I lost loads of weight breastfeeding, it was so exhausting and I was super run-down. Also a few months after birth I lost handfuls of hair, the joy of the hormones. Kate would be about that stage. Oh and to the pressure on women, look at Old Wills he's straight-up going bald and no-one cares!

      Delete
    4. Oh gawd, the hair loss! Such a glamourous old time ;-)
The double-standards are alive and well, aren't they? We've come a long way and yet still have so far to go.

      Delete
    5. Dani, I meant to say that a lot f people think that if Wills was still a hunk that the media attention would be two fold so some joke that he pulls his hair out! But I think with Wills he has our attention due to going thru his life events with him so he isn't judged as harshly as a newcomer to the family. But the double standards stand for sure.

      Delete
    6. I haven't heard that joke but I get it! Truth is he's a handsome man and seems a good person. I'm one of those women who find bald men attractive so I think he gets better looking, and yes so much of the scrutiny on Kate is the newcomer-commoner thing. Hopefully that calms down for her, yeah but it probably won't.

      Delete
    7. Really? Bald isn't my thing. So you fancied George costanza? ;p

      Delete
    8. George Costanza! Well maybe if he was a lot taller. ;) And not as whiny/weird!

      Delete
    9. Interesting post Naomi!
You guys are cracking me up with the George Costanza!! Lol. I agree that there is too much expectation and I hope that she continues to do her own thing. Clearly she is putting the baby before glamour and that is nice. She surely is tired. When I was nursing, I was also thin, tired and lost a bunch of hair after the birth. It's not an attractive time. Celebrities flaunting that they are back in shape after a few months perpetuate this kind of thinking.Good for Kate. She'll get her self together in time, like all moms eventually do. I hope other moms will look to her as an example. Perfection not needed!

      Delete
    10. But Kim don't you think that there are women who like bald men but not many men have a fetish for bald women? Except perhaps Sinead O'Connor at her peak? ;P The thing is though for Brits and Commonwealth countries, Kate isn't a celebrity - she is a public servant. Imagine if Michelle Obama went on a state visit and she looked less than groomed? I think that is more the issue from our point of view and that is what sets this slightly apart. But I do think for the rest of us that this period of motherhood is usually a time where rules of grooming shouldn't apply. I did notice she put on a hat for today's Remembrance service and she looks nice.

      Delete
    11. Yicks, late to this conversation but I want to add that bald men aren't my thing either, not that you care about that. But have you noticed only really beautiful women can get away with cutting off all their hair?

Also, ruth - your daughter is very wise.

      Delete
    12. Actually there was a hairdresser who said something that stuck with me - only really beautiful and really ugly women can have short hair?!

  7. Maybe Kate has been reading those blogs, where women boast about deciding turning gray ; )
Ok, my daughter too stopped coloring her hair while pregnant and now while breastfeeding.
Kate´s asset is her slimness and height.
She is pretty, not a beauty. But aren´t all young women pretty?
With the budget of her´s, she can buy all the nice clothes, which add to her looks.
Looking at her closely, she " might " need some cosmetic treatments at an early age, e.g.the lines on the forehead, the slim upper lip, etc.
I know, that my remarks are not appreciated by many, sorry for that.

    1. Hi Mette, I appreciate your thoughts even if I disagree :-)
It's interesting that you use the word 'boast' for a natural process. I think that many women probably would love to stop dyeing their hair, but are unable to take the plunge due to pressure from other women!
I don't colour my hair, but may decide to when greys appear. However, I would try not to judge a women who decided not to dye her hair. I think I might be in the minority, though!

    2. Having grown up in Asia where most people are the same hair. Olof I always found it intriguing that women and of course I am generalising wanted to be blonde. Especially in Australia where blonde is the benchmark. So I always wondered why girls at uni would go. Rome and stay in to dye their hair every four weeks. So actually I think not just greeting but hair color in general is a huge primal reaction. I mean type the word blonde on google and there are millions of websites of all sorts and color does conjure up a lot of emotions and primal responses. I

  8. Mette, you know I appreciate your opinion because you don't mince words and are uncalculating! I do wonder if she will indeed succumb to plastic surgery. Princess Diana passed away too early to have to face those issues unfortunately so perhaps we should appreciate if most of us are lucky enough to contemplate how to fight the signs. Ps I must say some go gray better than others. Not everyone looks good going gray if I am to be honest!

    1. I think it would be hard not to colour one's hair if one went grey very early.... It is ageing, and I think that's hard to pull-off for a young person.
One of my school friends was pretty much totally grey in her late 20s. She didn't colour her hair and it did look great. However, people would automatically assume she was decades older than she was. I'm not sure that I could have coped with that....

  9. How old is Kate, 31? That's the age I was when I had my youngest and I was covering gray every few months, I do remember using the hair dye sparingly when pregnant and breastfeeding. I was worried about it more when I was pregs though. She looks tired and maybe a bit too thin which would increase the lines on her face and under her eyes. My guess is she's hard on herself (especially around weight) and won't like these pics, I bet she didn't realize her roots were as noticeable as they are.
God love her the scrutiny she's under! And your guess is right, it won't matter how many nannies she has, she's the only one with the boob milk, she's probably up half the night!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Yes she is about that age. The India she has gone gray even before she gave birth but I think it's just really noticeable now. Beforehand she still manages to get by and I just thought it was a stray. Now I suppose it is for health reasons and yes the scrutiny on her is relentless but the palace also do their bit to mold public opinion of her so it is a two wat street. But it would be interesting which path she chooses to go down. Not all mothers strive to look good and other priorities take over it seems. But that's the thing about being a mum, it really does seem like there is only so much help one can absorb and she is the one with the milk!

  11. I am so surprised to see Kate is going grey. It always catches me by surprise to find out when women are colouring their hair (silly, I know, but I have never coloured my hair before and I always forget that quite a lot of women do colour their hair). If she's nursing, then I'd assume she is staying away from the chemicals, which are quite harsh. I honestly don't think it's a huge deal and if anything, it helps to underline her down-to-earth, grounded image.

    1. Yes a lot of people dye their hair even before going gray but then it becomes a chore rather than an artistic experiment. Some are lucky and don't go grey until their forties and some go grey in their teens but I think it is the overall change of demeanour and the rather visible change of having a baby. For some it seems there is no effect and I think maybe it's just the lighting but the change is quite noticeable is all. I am sure she will do whatever she sees fit. She doesn't seem to be swayed by public opinion anyway...

    2. I too am surprised to know Kate colors her hair but I'm glad to know she may be thinking about her health instead of trying to appear picture perfect. It's interesting how some things are more obvious when photographed, I'm surprised to see my white shirts not as opaque as they seem to be. Or maybe it's that we're able to study the details with a still photograph.

    3. I don't think she has a proper stylist but the basic first rule of styling as you know from experience is take a photograph as the naked eye is never to be trusted. I must assume she would have known as she is now a veteran at getting her photo taken. But then again even stylists make mistakes as we have seen from past Oscars :)

It's odd though because perhaps the mothers instincts kick in and one just doesn't care anymore bc I know I don't make the same effort as I did in my twenties bc I genuinely don't care about my exterior as much...but yes I don't know if I am conditioned in my initial response to all this and "letting oneself go".

    1. I don't really have a strong opinion about her either way but I was surprised at my I itial and second reaction. I think it just touches on the theme of ageing and letting oneself go and as women that is a topic no matter how one tries to escape it and no matter where you are from that women are confronted with. And to be honest I don't know I'd that inspection of women will end.

      Delete
  17. I have two thoughts on this - one is that there is a lot of pressure on women to look good after giving birth, and we should give her a break. But then I also think, hang on, she is living in a Palace - she has staff laid on. Yes, she might be up breastfeeding a lot, but she doesn't actually have to do anything else. All her housework is done for her, she has help... and no other children. She gets housecalls for her haircuts and colours (I'm assuming, it wouldn't be done in the front window of a salon in London somewhere), so there's no excuse in my book. I managed to keep up appearances while sleep deprived, husband away and two other children with a newborn, so she can go and get her hair done properly. Or at least style it differently so that you don't notice the roots (as I do when I can't get to the salon...) xx

I know that you have better things to write about. This is beyond trivial. I had to look at both photographs of Kate several times before I could discern what you were referring to. Without conceding that Catherine's roots are an appropriate topic, I must say that she looks wonderful, particularly for a new mother. Unless you have been one, you cannot imagine the exhaustion, and focus on baby, of a happy new parent, particularly a breastfeeding mother. Please, let Catherine be free to enjoy this very special, albeit challenging, time without snarky comments from the public that bear no relevance to the important work that she has done and will do in her position.

    1. Hi Leslie, I do appreciate your comment believe it or not.

Yes there are better and worse subjects to write about but I am not sure how often you visit the blog but I try and write on various subjects. However, the main premise of my blog is that I pretend I am meeting the reader for a cup of tea and we chit chat about fashion to linguistics. I also try in life to take a measured and tempered view on all things. As the Americans say I rarely drink the kool aid. I am sorry that you thought I was being snarky. I wasnt. The post was one I wrote minutes after I saw the pictures as it brought out a strong reaction in me which I was surprised about. I am very opinionated and in the past as a lawyer I was paid to be so as well! So I was surprised as I said in my comment earlier how conflicted I was in my opinions. I raised questions that my response to the images brought. I mentioned I have no idea the fatigue and I am due for a hair cut myself but this isn't necessarily about her roots. It touches on ageing, ones position, ones exposure to so many women having given birth then being on the cover of vogue, does grooming affect ones standing, do women have a duty to look good? Also one has to be reminded that the royal family in the UK are actual political and spiritual leaders. In America they are just another celebrity but here their duty is to parade in front of the public so it is a slightly different status that she is in as opposed to Jennifer Aniston.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your bringing us to this discussion. I just wish we could have had it without focusing on an actual person who is in the middle of a very vulnerable time for anyone, much less someone trying to juggle a very public public life with new parenthood. Also, as a feminist and an attorney who cut her teeth on civil rights concerns, I was sad to see how many of your readers jumped in to criticize Catherine for such an extremely minor flaw (if indeed it is a flaw). I apologize for and withdraw "snarky." Best regards, Leslie

      Delete
    3. Hi Leslie, once again the royal family seems to be a reminder and a source of conversation that brings up a topic for the public en masse. Especially for those in the Commonwealth, we are fed images of them regularly so they have become like our parallel family. And with all families, we have our favourites and those we clash with. Please also remember that I "know" my fellow bloggers so a lot of blogs end up as a forum or platform where people come together and safely share their opinions. To think that one would meet up with a girlfriend and not discuss Kate's roots and how there are double standards as other have mentioned for men and women is also a point that her roots have highlighted ( no pun intended ). Also please note that while Americans have had their revolution and don't pay for the royal family, UK taxpayers pay for a part of their upkeep to stay in their palaces and they get obscure tax breaks. Being British, there is protocol and Kate's appearance jarred with this ideal that they have a duty to represent the public and as much as we all say we like realism I don't think many of us do. Her going grey isn't a flaw and if she was a civilian it wouldn't even be an issue. But then again if Kate didn't marry William, she wouldn't be talked about either. It isn't necessarily about Kate, it's about her position. Thanks for bringing up your point of view though - that's what makes this all so interesting! Kind regards, Naomi

  20. If we all had as much 'help' laid on and resources at our disposal as she does, there would be no excuse for having even a hair out of place!

It's her job now to look immaculate at all times and in all circumstances.
She married into 'The Firm', and as such accepted the rules.

Just imagine if The Queen showed up somewhere looking dishevelled!

    2. Gosh the UK folks are tough on people! Just because she has money and is part of the firm, doesn't make her less human. So she has hair people at her disposal, perhaps she less shallow than you think and is not dyeing her hair because of the breastfeeding. Wow.

  21. I am relieved to see that Kate is human; I think that little bit of grey is endearing, if surprising, as she is usually so immaculate in every aspect of her appearance. Although we are used to seeing celebrity mothers bouncing back on to the public stage almost the day after a birth, I think the UK Govt (and other govts) adopt an approach which is more sensible. Kate, if she were treated as well as a Government employee, would have been entitled to at least 52 weeks maternity leave. I would have been happy if she had done just that.

The stage in which hair comes out is quite alarming as well and perhaps she does not want to fiddle with it; your hair "freezes" in telophase during the pregnancy and gets that thick fullness we all loved. Then, a few months after delivery every hair you would have lost during pregnancy now comes out in a short period of time.

  25. Ha do you know I thought of you when I saw this and predicted you would do a post about it. I'm with you, I do have certain expectations of how certain people should present themselves, not just celebs/famous people, even civilians in everyday life. I actually still think she looks quite groomed. My understanding is that your hair can fall out and/or change colour when you have given birth because of the drop in hormones. This might be the reason here, how unfortunate that it is grey. I also understand that a lot of mothers don't like to dye their hair when they are breastfeeding, so this might be another reason. My opinion is I love the fact that she is comfortable enough not to do anything about it and I salute her if the reason for the grey hair is to do with the points I mentioned above.

OMG I found two grey hairs last month and I was close to getting some anti-depressants. I'm blaming it on all the heat processing rather than age!

Yes I think it is endearing but goes against the ethos of the royal family but then again times they are a changing so maybe they are catching up? I think for some reason after all the uk media had her roots the next day as the front page she might wear hats until she can dye her hair again don't you think?

  28. Haha.. you look traumatized ;)
Well I'm sad too but in another way. Yes I expect her to be always "perfect" (I mean "as perfect as she can be"), but I don't really care. However, I'm pretty sure that when you are HER and even when you're a mother you can afford to spend an hour taking care of your hair, I just think that maybe the process of being a mother makes you not care as much about stuff like that (which, let's be honest, are not really important, generally speaking).

    1. Initially I was more shocked than anything and I couldn't figure out why! But I don't personally think she is perfect at the best of times to be brutally honest and I don't regard her as a personal style icon so I was just taken aback at my reaction. But if anything it shows that motherhood is a great equalizer and it is hard regardless of circumstance.

  29. Interesting post Naomi! I saw the headline for the princess and her stray roots. Nothing like a little international news coverage of an off hair day. Seriously, I saw a pic of her that day and thought she looked a little bewildered and sad. My hope is that she isn't having some post-postpartum depression (which makes things like grooming, roots and such much less important) or sadness at realizing how public her once private life has become. Speaking of roots-mine are in a sorry state but my fresh supply of color just arrived (I'm a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to roots).
    Happy weekend!
    xx, Heather

    1. I think also because she is known for her hair the very fact that her crown and glory wasn't as tip top as normal was even more jarring. But I didn't even consider that there might be some post partum, Princess Di experienced it as well. Hopefully she gets back to normal and takes all her vitamins to get back to optimum health. But the sad thing is even if God forbid she doesn't want to stay married we have seen from Princess Di and Fergie that you are never out of the spotlight...I better book my hair appointment this week speaking of which! xx

    2. Me too! I'm just cheap enough to figure out how to purchase my professional color for my own roots. Feel so smug saving $50 bucks or so. ;)

  30. I've been hiding my grey since about 30...it really draws on my complexion and makes me look haggard! So, of I were Kate, I'd pile my hair pupfish to cover it, if not dying for the b.milk. But, I still think she looks lovely, and good for her for not hiding out. I know what you mean about expecting the public duty to include looking one's best. I suppose that's why I make an effort when going out with friends, etc. it's almost like good manners. I'm sure that's an awful thing to say, really. Poor girl. I. So glad I'm not at all famous! Love your blog!

    1. I've had a few grey hairs since a few years back and am at an odd stage where they come and go as well! MInd you she can't really hide out that long unfortunately...But yes you are right about grooming and dress - it almost becomes about showing effort to your host or guest isnt it? Being famous is a full time job for sure. Thanks for coming by WRIIndia!

  31. My thoughts? I feel sorry for the poor girl because everybody's grilling her on this now... Judging by her fashion/style track record, she's a very polished individual and I just think she had no idea her roots were showing or were that obvious. Maybe she wasn't out in direct sunlight for a while and nobody noticed the roots, but they certainly did now and I'm sure she had a dye job done by now.:) I personally don't expect anybody to do anything but I think it's for your own good to try and look as best as you can so you feel better. I'm sure she feels pretty miserable now for filling the tabloids with such news... Sorry for contributing such a lengthy comment, babe.:D

    1. No not lengthy at all - I love to hear your thoughts!! Yes I am sure she must have been surprised because the press never say a critique about her but I noticed she wore a full hat yesterday at the memorial services so I am sure this was a wake up call!
