French Vogue February 2014 Part 2

This is Part 2 of the February issue of French Vogue.
Click here to browse through Part 1 if you would like.

Vogue France seem to do more editorials than the US version.
As we all saw in the September issue, Anna Wintour needs to edit even the work of Grace Coddington but perhaps the office politics is slightly different under Emmanuelle Alt's direction.

 I loved all these editorials.
I enjoyed the art direction, the clothes, and the models.
This first black and white one was a particular standout and one that I will probably remember for many years to come.

Dominique Levy is an art gallerist who lives in New York - she is one of the few female heavyweights and every art collector would take note of not only her exhibitions but her personal style.

This photo shoot does what it says on the tin - very irresistible.

I remember when the French were really into the "body"
as they used to say - they were shirts that acted like a one piece suit and I liked them because one never fiddled
with the shirt and it stayed put.

I won't bother to show the article about Anne Hidalgo but
if you want me to email you the article let me know.
But I wanted to show you how attractive the new mayor of Paris is.
Let's hope she doesn't get tangled up in one of those scandals the French do so well hehe.

This editorial called -Emily- was also produced by the editor!
I wonder how she manages to micro and macro manage everything.

Maybe it was because of the high end jewellry involved?
She probably was the mediator and
tried to coax in some more advertising.

My least favorite was the spread below.
It was an ode to the Superbowl and  American football and
hit a dud note.

And considering I wear sports gear on a regular basis,
even I didn't not learn anything from this.

Cute guys though.

I must say I love a "story".
I quite like the character building of a fashion editorial and
"Saskia" is a great model.

I have watched enough episodes of American's Next Top Model
to know that this pose is hard to do and
yet she looks like she is only getting started.

Sitting on leopard and floral fabric wearing black is a fashion Do.

Each and every shot is thought out, there is a new set, new mood.

Sometimes I jest about the French taking certain things too seriously but in this case it just feels earnest and they tried hard
and it paid off.

If someone walked out like this  I would say that even the
most jaded of urbanites would turn around.

The title below in French translates as -
The emotion / things that stir the emotion of the month.

No thank you but very photogenic.
Have a great weekend everyone x

PS I won't do any more no comments post as people only end up emailing anyway and some of you have said that it is annoying
but just wanted to say I may not get reply to comments
quickly this weekend.

  1. Naomi thanks so much for this as it is impossible for me to get my paws on French Vogue, I wouldn't have seen it otherwise! I remember "the body" I had one in 1990 and I loved it, it had sheer black sleeves and was so comfy to wear with anything. I am fidgety with my clothes so wonder I liked it, I should find another!
    Have a great weekend.xox

    1. It reminded me of kookai ones! I loved them and then they fizzled...might go to wolf odds bc they do them still. Glad you liked the French issue and have a great weekend too xx

    2. Wow, kookai bodies. They were a staple in the 80' in Paris!

    3. I just made the cute because they were still going strong in 1990 when I was there and then they just fizzled out?

    1. Black and white is definitely underused at US Vogue.

  3. Merci Part 2! I love all those white looks on Freja. And don't ever feel like you need to respond to my comments. I'm just letting you know that I like what you do. So there.

    1. Freja is a very 1920's looking model and suits the set well and thank you Connie you are right - I just have been a bit rundown lately!

  5. and if I wore a bodysuit I would probably spend a whole lot of time fishing it out of my jacksy, as my torso is long. Not really a good look.

  6. Ah, Naomi. You are such a Great Public Service. Thank you for scanning this.I love Vogue etc but I really need to curtail my magazine spending a bit. I do mean to comment more but much as I love all your posts, I often just don't have anything sensible to say. Please keep posting and have a Great Weekend. (or Week-end, as they say in Fr Vogue...).

    1. Sue I have nothing sensible to say and I am posting it hehe! No I completely understand what you feel because sometimes I want to say "nice post" but then I try and think of something interesting thing to say or I write without thinking about it so I have tried to retrain my own commenting habits :) Hope you are having a lovely le week-end too!

  8. I have enjoyed this post and the last as it's a while since I read French Vogue. I particularly liked the black and white editorial and the last image which is both creative and fun. I like the way many French magazines often cover a wide variety of topics as well as fashion and beauty. French Marie Claire is another favourite of mine.

    1. I usually only get extra French mags on the eurostar or if a friend brings back extra mags from their eurostar trip! :)

  9. Loved all the fashion stories - so artistic (and so different from that damn superbowl photo shoot in last months Vogue US). The black and white one is particularly good. Also love the jewellery one. I never buy French Vogue as I can't understand French, but am now wishing I could - the US one with the boring celeb covers is not cutting it for me at the moment... xx

    1. Those superbowl pics were really awful. It must have been a directive from head office or something because it was soo jarring!! They really do so much jewellry compared to all the other Vogues - I would have thought that the US market would be the prime target as in continental Europe they don't even have a realy buy your engagement ring culture either so I would love to know the marketing decisions behind that,. xx

  10. Aren't black and white shots just so striking - I love the second androgynous shot. I've been meaning to try a few black and white piccies out myself, but have never really experimented. I'm not too impressed with the super-bowl attire either, I think they have taken it to the extreme, they could have still used the theme but perhaps a little more subtle maybe, but then I guess it wouldn't be Vogue. Saskia is indeed a great model and that last outfit oooph! Have a lovely weekend hunny bunny x

    1. Yes I adore black and white but I think it is one of those things like subtitles that marketers say that it turns audiences off. But you would think Vogue would have wanted to be at the forefront. Saskia isn't "pretty" in the conventional sense but she just does great strong characterizations and love her xx

  11. love LOVE love your commentary - just so you know - every time we head to the newsstand (*sobs* now closed down and incorporated into mean little shelves facing the street instead) at Book Soup on Sunset Blvd, we always imagine your Australian/British undertones accent (not that we've heard it in RL so we imagine it) scanning the shelves letting us know What's Good to Read.

    genius.

    1. IRL I have an American accent! But depends on who I speak to and then I saw the odd inflection but I try not to sound like Lloyd Grossman although I like his sauces xx

  12. The only thing I can see that doesn't really mesh neatly is the awful American sports shoot. Flat lighting, and awful clothes, with a theme that should have been left for dead in the brainstorm meeting. Cheesey, with extra processed cheese on top!

The great thing about Paris Vogue is the use of guest editors...time for US version to have a rethink I think. New blood needed ASAP!

I'm not sure that many people realise that you can subscribe digitally for a fraction of the price. Not as tactile, but much easier to get hold of!

    1. Yes it was "Krafty" - sorry I couldn't resist! The US have to rethink a lot of things - I wonder when Anna will ever retire??? Yes I must write that down and find out what the android equivalent is for those who are interested to find out.

  13. I really wished I hadn't seen those Super Bowl images…has left a dreadful montage in my head…going back to the top of the post to refill my mind with those superbly elegant b & w images instead…..

  14. My favourite photo is the final one in the Emily editorial. Love your comment on your accent. Mine is ???? and changes according to where I am and to whom I am talking. It's so unreliable.

    1. Yes I don't understand why Emily is looking so upset in all the other pics wearing such objects of beauty!!! Yes accents are a funny thing no?

  15. Great posts as I have learned so many things... I had no clue that our "body" were so typically French... I was still with Bertrand Delanoé as mayor of Paris!!! The white and black fashion story is my preferred one.
And yes micro and macro managing is typically French...
