Frieze London 2018 - Farcical.

I went to the very first Frieze when the concept of pop up and art fairs were still novel.

I enjoyed my first Frieze and the last few years I missed out because I was always in Asia -off topic best time to go to East Asia!

I was quite excited to go and the English autumn was just perfect the day I went.
It is located in Regent's Park and they had an external installation of sculptures.
Not much to share but this was the only thing I liked because it reminds me of the billboards in small towns and neighbourhoods in the States.

I will cut to the chase.
These were probably one of the few pieces I liked.

I only went to the main Frieze - not the Frieze masters which was another pavilion.

But most of the work was worse than this painting below.

Doesn't it look like the rough draft for the Pink Floyd album?

This frog ballerina is just horrid.
No composition, no technique, no color blocking.
Not even a statement regardless of political leaning which is boring but at least there is a naivety in those works.
Just crap.

Packaging material is becoming vogue - a very postmodern way to make use of something.

This chair was done by a Brooklyn artist who resides in Berlin.
Double hipster equals negative.
They do better fakes than this Rimowa.
It looks like the lost and found at any Asian airport luggage centre.

Give up while you are trying to hook up an electric appliance?
Leave it and then sell it for 5 figures.

You spent all your life making money to hire a designer or buy an expensive off plan apartment and then imagine the soul destroying moment some art galleries tries to flog you blinds that reminds you of the start up office where it all began.

Yes.
Really.

Or as I retitled - chutzpah.

You know what the art gallery equivalent is of a dome glass domestically?
Framed plexiglass.

Imagine all those poor charity shops who don't realise they are selling their used kitchen wares so cheap.

So disturbing.

I was really reaching.
Was it about that case of the MI5 gay guy who zipped himself up in his gym bag?
But there were to many on the floor bleak installations.

Didn't ask if the hair with the bottles was included.

I don't know how devil worship became so popular?
Was it pizza gate and Beyonce that made this ode to Bephamet so mainstream?
I can't bear her.

UK papers have been reporting about 'middle class' fly tipping.
Well that is now officially classified as art.

'Let them eat cake' art.
Do you feel hard to feel unless there is a cataclysmic event?
Well, here is a simulated earthquake disaster zone to remind you how lucky you are.

This 'sculpture' is patronising AF.

This is now just taking the piss.

I was delighted when I saw tea towels hung on a big wall.
Shows you how standards have changed during my Frieze walkabout.

Urinals in a row - it has been done.

Damien First did medicine cabinets - but funnier.

I didn't eve bother asking how much Japanese walking sticks stuck in styrofoam was.

When a collage done by some app by a 12 year old who loves kittens  is considered one of the best pieces in the show, you know this was a big failure.

I am so glad I went.
Just to know to give it a rest next year.

  1. Hello Naomi, This reminds me of Joe Keenan's character who went to "one of those boldly experimental galleries, dedicated to the proposition that nothing is wholly devoid of aesthetic, and, it follows, monetary value."

At least these are sculptures that can be hidden away. It seems that more and more the practice of architecture has assumed these same values.

  2. I can say it is just so much endless, pretentious mental masturbation.
But that is an understatement, today's post-modernists are just lazy on top of it.

  6. Great commentary and how can you not agree with your observations. Some particularly uninspiring stuff. I just read the Women's Room post on the inside work - lot more inspiring pieces though post mainly on the fashion. Particularly like the Nick Cave sound suits. Oh to be in London instead of wet AGAIN DC.

  9. Did you ask for a refund? I would have. But then again, with 'art' like this, I don't think I would have bothered to roll out of bed.

PS: Yes, Pink Floyd is exactly what I thought too.

  12. I think it must be so hard to be an artist today, to standout, to compete against the likes of Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Picasso, and Turner. Well then, what can one do, other than be different for the sake of being different. If by being different for the sake of, one turns out to actually have talent, well, so much the better, if not, who cares, you are still different, and still grabbing notoriety, and most importantly, sales...

  13. Oh my God. This was worse than you even shared on Instagram. Horrifying!! I'm now looking at rubbish and random household objects with a new found appreciation for their potential value.
I was following a much lauded local gallery on instagram, but had to unfollow when I decided most of the 'art' they represented was completely awful and very much of this ilk.

  16. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text
in your content seem to be running off the screen in Chrome.
I'm not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I'd
post to let you know. The style and design look great though!
Hope you get the problem solved soon. Thanks

  18. Great blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?
A theme like yours with a few simple adjustements would really make my blog jump out.
Please let me know where you got your design. Thank you

  19. You actually make it appear so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something that
I think I'd by no means understand. It seems too
complicated and extremely broad for me. I'm looking forward to
your next put up, I will try to get the hang of it!
