The Newly Burgeoned British Tribes - Brexiteers and Remainians

If you didn't follow the British EU referendum then
this post won't really mean anything!

when it was mistaken for Twitter

Remanians on Instagram June 24th 7:30 a.m.

A fallen star. Broken dreams.

OMG - so sad. I miss my European compatriots already but I hate 52% of stupid British voters because they have ruined my life.

The Brexiteer on Instagram on June 24th 9:30am

People were like orthodox Jewish mums with 4 children on Xmas day pretending like it was just another day...

Gosh, I wish hydrangea season would last forever!

Thank goodness the sun has come out!

The Neverendum Remainiac Petition Signer

Due to security reasons, this person never used Autofill for forms on their iphone but with all the petitions, they are making an exception.  Just signed 2nd EU referendum petition, the recount of the first referendum results petition, the keep having referendums until we get the result we want petition.

They also went along and signed the make London its own city state petition but had to begrudgingly stop at the off shoot campaign to make just Zone 1 a British Monaco regime because Richmond is zone 4.  Soooo busy.

The Chattering Classes Remainer

Via
Their teeth aren't chattering because of their chat but because of Project Fear.
Via

The Millennial Remainer

They thought that liking the EU Facebook page and trolling UKIP's twitter account would account for something but apparently 1000 likes on Facebook isn't even worth one trip down the polling station.
Via

Their new buzz word is political eugenics.   They are so mad that they are not going to speak to their nana and grandpops for ruining their future until they give over a 35% deposit on a flat on a co buy with 4 other flat mates of an ex council flat in north London.  They are devastated that they will now no longer be able to have the option to work for non existent jobs in most of continental Europe and they don't speak German anyway which is the only place to have possible gainful employment in the E.U.  They now drown their sorrows by competing on whose life is more ruined by Brexit on Snapchat.

The London Luvvie Remained

Don't take too much notice of the sign in their spare bedroom that says guests are like fish and that they stink after three days.  That only applies to their family and closest friends who stay and abide by that rule. Oh no, they love migrants - refugees even better.
Via
The pain and misery of the situation makes them feel oddly alive - it is the middle class version of self harm. Scabs on forearms seem to make others uncomfortable no matter how many cups of tea one offered them from experience.

They also think it is so close minded of all those ill educated and xenophobic people to be scared of Turkey possibly joining the E.U.  It is utterly shameful and if they had their way Iran should be invited to join the E.U. as well.  Think of all that tariff free rose water, pistachios, and pomegranate molasses that they could get for all their third Wednesday night of the month dinner parties!

The No Emotion and Statistic Spewing Brexiter

This persons reply to the Remain campaign political platitude of "Stronger, Better, United" was to reply with

"Yes that seems rather noble but the overall economic model on which stable societies are based on is fiscally nearly impossible. Look at Italy and its debt of $2 trillion alone with its bond market about to explode.  Italian banks own upwards of $400 billion of sovereign debt.  How are we meant to absolve Italy's 135% debt to GDP ratio?
And yet as as a net contributor to the EU budget how will the ECB cope? Shall we move on to Greece's finances?"
The question is received by dead silence even by those who plan on voting to leave.

The True Blue Anglo Saxon

It's not that she doesn't like foreigners. It's that she never liked garlic.  She can't go to anyone's house as they all cook in bleeding olive oil and a fried egg doesn't taste proper unless cooked with lard.  She has pepper, salt, and hp sauce ( for her guests )  in her cupboard. She once had to brush her teeth for days after she had a chorizo roll at her Women's Institute summer barbecue.  She has builders tea, lapsang suchong and earl grey but none of that coffee business and thinks people walking around the high street with paper cups looks ridiculous even if they are 14th generation Yorkshire bred.  She remembers her mother complaining about Elizabeth David when her first cookbook was published and she managed on Mrs Beeton just fine enough.

The Posh Brexiteer

One can't pigeon hole Etonians on this issue with alumni straddled equally on both sides.  But this is their chance to prove they are patriots and they are willing to sacrifice their wealth on paper and go down 13% in their portfolio when they are next on the Sunday Times Rich List.   They don't mind the vitriol spewed on Leave voters because they are used to being mocked.  There are very few people he can consult with as his muccas are out on the campaign trail and he isn't meant to see his parents in Scotland until the fishing season.  So instead of asking which way he should vote with his folks who he is terribly fond of and does admire - it was ultimately his game keeper who convinced him that a leave vote was the right thing to do.

The Royalist Brexiteer

She knows all the names of all the royals and sends them cards she chooses at the post office.  She always says a little prayer for her majesty and asks that the vicar does a mention for Prince Philip whenever she hears he might be unwell when reading Majesty.
She not only has doilies in her place but has a name for them too so she can remember to put them back in their proper place.

Via
She was told by her grandchildren and the Archbishop of Canterbury to vote for Remain but then she saw that the Queen was for Brexit and she is if nothing else a loyal subject.

The 3 Passport owning Brexiter

Speaks to mummy in Dutch, papa in Spanish, eats Italian, schools in French, prays in Latin, talks to their help in English, vacations in Creole, votes British.

You didn't really think I wouldn't write a post about one of the most important political events in our lifetime? ;)

  1. Wow, this post makes my head spin. This has been such a tough issue and it seems like it is absolutely fracturing the country into pieces, based on what you've written here! I don't know what to make of it. I feel like something similar is happening here in the US, everyone is going crazy. I despise both choices for the election in the fall and can only see how things will get worse, no matter which one wins. It's very sad. xx

    1. Yep - hugely tough issue and I have never seen the country more divided on any subject. It is still going on and changing so fast that feelings of yesterday are quickly out of date and not let to form any shape bc one is dealing with something else! We are living in interesting times indeed xx

  2. We were in a frazzle for all of a day or two with the Brexit and then we realized we have Clinton vs Trump to worry about over here. It all gets sorted out and hopefully the world does not end :)

    1. Hopefully it will get sorted and I do think the world will go on and in actual fact all things considering it is still peaceful x

    1. There are already 2 types of referendums this October - Italy for their banking issues and Hungary for Schengen. Who knows how Switzerland will deal with the freedom of movement issue..?

  4. So much is happening so fast all around the world….so I'm hunkering down and focussing on domestic minutiae.

    Miss you on fb!! xxxxx

    1. Did you see private eye this week? It was so funny bc they were saying they won't bother putting anything in print for their issues bc everything is out of date by the end of the day! Oddly yesterday with having a new PM seemed like a rather slow news day hehe xxx

  5. This is the first time I've had a laugh over the Brexit commotion and kerfuffle and utter shock of it so thank you. I was so hoping you'd write a post on it! XO

    1. I wasn't going to write anything people have gone over on both sides so I thought we should have a bit of tongue in cheek with it BC what else can we do if we are not chosen for a cabinet position? Xx

  6. Hahaha this is so perfect! I've been wondering how you're doing amid this sea of absolute bizarrity. At least you can find the humor. And of course those ~soul healing~sunrises :) do you think if we had an avocado toast summit we could unite the land?
I'm having my own voter identity crisis as my skin crawls at the thought of voting for Clinton but obviously I will not vote for Trump under any circumstance. We have a third party candidate who sort of represents my party-but voting for him would be basically a throwaway vote. If he even made it to the ballot. Maybe you should move here to the States. Then at least we can trade sarcastic barbs while the world burns down. I've mastered the grapefruit Tanqueray and tonic so there's that.

    1. Yes, I do ideally wish we had a third option in the referendum. Of course now there are divisions among the leavers so it's all fun and games! Do you know that in parts of the U.K. Avocado toast is still a bit exotic? When Nigella showed Britain how to make it some slated her but it shows how divided this country is hehe. But I'd love to come over if you're having an election night party though I must say you should take advantage of the exchange rate and visit!!!

  7. Well, Naomi - you are v brave to put your head above the parapet...I live in a Top University town approx. 50miles from London, and there is a collective nervous breakdown ongoing. Still. I am still glued to all media outlets, obviously and can't tear myself away. ( Actually, I am going on holiday tomorrow so the obsession will resolve itself at that point)

    1. I think the news ratings have been staggeringly higher than ever!! I watch daily politics news night etc with more relish than I did the game of thrones series finale which I waited for until I got back from holiday and it was so dull in comparison. I must admit I was not detached in Italy just BC too much was going on and everyone was in a state of shock whichever way you voted. I do think you'll have a great time in holiday as the new cabinet is in place and there won't be an interest rate cut news for a few months now :) bonnes vacancies Sue

  8. Golly , just when US politics and the primaries had become an all-consuming topic for me, when THIS comes along and blows it all away! I've been having such fun following the day-to-day reactions of my fellow Brits (listening to LBC on my phone has been an eye opener), the "all change" at the top, and the rebellion that is going on within Labour, and the fallout from the new cabinet appointees. I've entirely forgotten about the current race over here.

    1. To be fair, after the initial drama in America in contrast the 6 week campaign here was the most intense I've ever seen and then when I thought it would essentially be over on the 24th either way only started a whole new onslaught. I'm not a labour voter but the whole situation there will surely be made into a tv series in a decade from now let alone the whole Gove episodes?!!

  10. Gosh I can't comment on all this, but to say that the new PM seems to be a sharp cookie and you all will hopefully be fine. After visiting last month, we were for you all remaining as the EU needs your influence and British practicality. Yet the stories I heard about the decisions and mismanagement of money in the EU seemed bad too. Still seems those that voted to leave were more of the mindset to keep foreigners out. We have a scary situation here with Trump that is similar. He's preying on all those older white voters that want to keep us white, straight and packing pistols. It's a very scary world and a lot of people here are clueless. After your vote, you cannot depend on the common sense of people. it's anything goes. xx Kim

    1. It was the most politically charged I have ever lived through. I can see why people would vote either funny enough and it's more about what's more important or what triggers the voter but that's just me of course. Others will be more absolute in their opinion! So many elections this year...but at least people can vote so they should!! Xx

  11. So, so funny! You really should submit this to one of the newspapers to run. I have watched the reactions with great interest from my perch on the other side of the world. I think you've summed it all up so well. Instagram and blogs and the vitriol on social media from both Europeans and UK slinging mud at each other was interesting. But your summation on every tribe is spot on I think. The world will keep spinning.... !!!

    1. I don't know what to do but just laugh about it although for some it is too soon still!! The US elections usually sling mud at each other but this is the first election I have been involved in where people genuinely begrudge someone's vote. If I wasn't involved I would find it so much more interesting :) But indeed life goes on and events are happening that put Brexit in the back burner even x

  12. Strangely despite the result, I've yet to meet anyone who voted out! In fact, I've met more people who have experienced racist remarks post-Brexit. It's fascinating to hear reports of how many more people voted compared to general elections. Oh well whats's done is done - onwards and upwards! xx

    1. Really? In Birmingham - the one city that voted Leave? That is so interesting. If anything people are much more interested in politics and I hope it makes feel people feel less disenfranchised and involved in the governing of the country - onwards and upwards indeed! xx

  13. I'm still shocked! Really cannot believe IT happened. Then again, Trump is the Republican nominee here....
