White Jeans Rules?

There is fashion folklore about white jeans only being worn
after the last Monday in May which is known
in North America as Memorial Day.
Via
The first time I heard of this was when I used to attend church every week in a US Military compound with American people who would murmur if someone wore a white dress in April.
That confuses me to this day.
But I love white jeans year round.
Via
I love how everyone says how crisp white jeans are.
Indeed they are.
Via
So crisp.
Via
So fresh.
Such a light neutral that goes with everything.
That good ol' favourite fashion - casual yet chic combo going on.
So streamlined.
It highlights accessories so well.
Via

It's a great staple to put on without much thought.
Except white jeans are very exacting.

It is a bipolar item of clothing.
It's not that you love it or hate it.
It either loves you and gives your physique unequivocal messages.
No self love pep talks there.
Save that for wooly jumpers.
When you say you love white jeans...

It means what you really and actually love is...

skinny,
long legged, or high heeled,
toned,
thigh gapped,
yoga'd up and pilatesed out,
young,
slim hipped,
linear physiques.

It's not an age thing like Cindy shows.
It's a thin thing.
Via
White jeans are ironically a great diet tool too.
Chocolate, red wine, and tomato sauce are atrocious
to get out on white cotton despite what
those laundry detergents advertisements say.
So you won't be bothered to eat.

  1. As you say so tricky. Go with anything, and yet i put them on and take them off a lot as I don't feel its the right day for them. I put them on and its feels like I've stepped in front of one of those mirrors, big blast around the nethers.

    1. It's goldilocks- not too skinny not too big. You've also got to be in the right mood as you say. I like skinny white with big top look.

  2. Yes. Agree with all of it. I couldn't do a white Jean not because I'm curvy but because I'm messy.

    1. I like food with sauces and a lot of coffee so doesn't work for me either!

    1. Sorry to hear that but I like the pics but I'm more thinking how none of them have a coffee or wine stain!

  4. Well you hit the nail on the head. I have a pair that are currently languishing because sadly they make my thighs look a bit like sausages. Sad. They work if I wear a long top with them. So I keep them and hope that maybe on a downswing, weight wise, I'll get them out again. But it is frustrating, because as you say they are crisp, fresh, don't look so casual as denim jeans... and I personally find with kids they're easy to clean because bleach gets everything out.
That whole labour day thing I only heard about because I used to read American mags as a teenager, like Seventeen. But I had thought it was white shoes?? xx

    1. I have a friend who is not thin st all but it just works on her and another who is skinny so in theory should work but just doesn't quite. But I think a loose biggish top is a nice balance otherwise it can be a bit dukes of hazard? I think it's just white anything and back in the 80's they took these rules a lot more seriously as does Oprah going on her old shows where she'd mention that too xx

  5. I'm inspired to work out some outfits featuring my white jeans for next year. Hoping that my little one who will be four by then will come to the party.

It is a good thought about how white jeans promote healthier eating.

    1. I always wear black nowadays. I loved paper denim jeans but since they no longer exist there's no way I can be bothered to try on 50 different jeans!! Xx

  6. White jeans are so not me! One of my best friends wears them all the time in summer but she has perfectly skinny legs due to large amounts of barre class and pilates, she wears them with tory burch tunic tops which is a great look on her. Also she told me the key is she has about 18 pairs because they get so filthy quickly with her 3 dogs.
Had to chuckle though because you've got it spot on as usual! XOX

    1. Funny BC I can see you in white jeans with a Brora jumper. I wish I knew what the factor was BC I have a friend who doesn't have skinny legs but still pulls it off so I'm still confused to what's the quality! Xx

  7. I quite like them on other people, although counter-intuitively, I think I prefer them in winter with large grey sweaters and oversized coats.Cannot ever imagine wearing them myself - would last about 2 minutes before getting covered in whatever...

    1. Yes I like the big coat or jumper look otherwise I think it can be visually skimpy and on the wrong person with the wrong tank top it can be non chalant LA girl on the pull!

  8. What an interesting post. I would love to know what US military installation you were on and going to church at regularly. The wives (I'm assuming it was the wives) were prob getting snippy because in the military there is a distinct set of rules regarding what color uniform is worn when. And I think "Summer Whites" which is a term the US Navy uses, is a Memorial Day and after thing. There is uniform of the day in the military! Anyhoo, I guess I don't think of white jeans as a thin thing since I see ladies of all shapes wearing them in NYC, whether they are toothpicks or curvy gals. I make sure to drink white white or prosecco when wearing mine, ha ha. I buy more than one pair at a time so if one is wrecked I can just move onto the other. What's anon above getting so uptight about? I like all the pictures you selected! Great post as usual. xx

    1. Growing up in Korea my father insisted on an English mass and the only option was to attend the church in the US military base. Good point about the strict military aspect actually. It was also the Reagan years! White jeans don't feature much here I must say it must be the weather?! Xx

  9. Well I agree with you 100%. I have 3 pairs and just bought another, but I wouldn't say they are my most flattering pants. The new pair I bought is very skinny and I'm still debating on keeping them. I just love the very sportif vibe of white pants. I mainly wear mine with sweaters and jackets...Kind of New England look. As far as food- yikes they are a magnet and I'm terribly sloppy. If I wear them I carry a stain pen with me.. xx Kim

    1. You look like you suit white jeans so well as you are to me a really California girl! I would get them if we had the right weather but white looks odd here. very stark not just on jeans but walls too! xx

  10. Oh, loved this post so much! I love white jeans too, but only in the heat of summer (too cold/windy in SF most of the year, including the traditional "summer" months).

Now, do you think the problem is really with the white jeans or rather the skinny shape of them? My pair are decidedly not skinny (neither am I) but I think I can get away with them because they are boot cut, which I find more flattering for my shape.

Now, I have to absolutely agree with the spillage situation. Such a pain! I dread to think what I'm going to be like in my dotage. Must invest in a bib (note to self!).

    1. in most shops now although it is changing - most jeans are by default skinny jeans. I think boot cut are the best in all form stop be frank. I am actually toying with the id oaf 501's just jeans. nothing else added ones!

  11. I adore white jeans but I adhere to the rule. Our weather is so wretched that I really embrace summery things and keep them summery. Between Victoria Day and Labour Day, I sport white jeans, eat butter tarts, and don't blow dry my hair unless I have too. The rest of the year, I keep a stiff upper lip and wear wool. Great photos. I have to lay off those butter tarts if I want to rock those looks!

    1. Didn't you just have snow a few weeks ago?! mind you you - get a coat and rock the winter look? I haven't tried canadian butter tarts but must google and see how they differ to other buttery tarts I normally consume.

  12. I love white denim too! I tend to go for a white denim skirt in the summer time as it gets so hot and humid here, I feel like I am roasting in a pair of pants.

  13. Ha ha. I own one pair of white jeans which I wear selectively; I certainly have to be in the 'I feel slimmer today' mood to wear them, but I never will be or want to be skinny but I have to admit, white jeans do seem to complement a skinnier long leg compared to a chunkier short leg but hey, there's plenty of other apparel pieces we can wear so I aint bothered! xx

    ReplyDelete
  14. You look great and rock the white jeans! I saw a really curvy girl actually bordering on beyond chunky but she pulled it off and sometimes skinny girls can't pull it off so like i said in one of the comments above i can't place what it is exactly about the white jeans thing!! xx

  15. I wish, I wish I had the right legs to wear skinny jeans, I think they look great. I've got four pairs of white trousers, crop, flare and so forth, but all generously shaped to accommodate pudgy knees and thighs! (Can't abide out at the knees, however!)

  17. Hi again Naomi, first, re Korea, does that mean you went to mass on the U.S. Army base in Seoul? I got to visit there when I was 16. My cross-country team competed against other military brats from Korea, Japan, Guam and the PI. I loved Korea! Second, GSL suddenly seems MIA--any idea why he is gone? I went to link to his blog and found that everything is gone. Hmm...

    1. Yes - i spent my Sundays with army brats! some air force and marines but mostly army! I can't believe you were in Yongsan! I might have even been at the meet and I met you and didn't know?! Hmm I wonder what he has done? I just went on instagram as well to find him and indeed he has vanished - I wonder if he is on a spy mission??? It wouldn't surprise me!

  18. I have spent a huge portion of my life in white jeans. I love them. If I can bind my love handles enough to wear them they are my favorite thing. I actually just bought a pair that might lead to my untimely demise if they don't fit soon but you never know maybe it'll be a triumph. Don't ask how the progress is going because if you never hear about the white jean quest again that will mean it crashed and burned. I'm kind of thinking I need to move to the south as I seem to be much more fit to southern tastes. And I feel like if I move down here that I'll need to be able to wear white jeans again. Or I could just wear the white jeans and look really fat but wear a flowing tommy Bahama shirt to obscure the midsection. It's good to have options

    1. i have never owned one even in my fitter days. I want men's spanx for the love handles bit bc I hear it works better than the women's which centers on hips. one of my many GEminian alter egos is southern - but white trash. Think beverly hill billes but on Battery Row!
