Headboard Decisions

Apart from the finishing off of walls, tiling and sealing stones,
I am in the middle of trying to decorate.  One of the latest matters occupying my brain is my headboard.

This is the headboard we have at present.
It is a simple ivory fabric.
Mr CSW doesn't like busy details and
I am not a hugely bothered either way.

I am tempted to keep it the way it is because the fabric matches the blinds and it is a very clean and streamlined look.  But as simple as it is I think it is too "generic interior designer decorating for resale" look.  Taupe is okay but sometimes it just makes me roll my eyes.

The wall color is as I like to call it -
no surprise because what Londoner doesn't use
 Farrow and Ball Elephant's Breath.

I do like it, I do.
So does Mr CSW but...

 I waiver between -
how soothing to
get off the polite decorating wall and
do something decisive goshdarnit.

So these are my other three options.
I love this fabric. It's called Equateur Imprime by Hermes home fabrics.
Some of you might recognize it as a scarf print.

I have had it lying around waiting for the perfect conduit to really showcase the color and design.
I am thinking of making a scarf or shawl out of this which would be ironic because I did make a cushion out of a scarf last year which you can read about here.

But a designer told me that to use this fabric as a headboard might not be the best use as the oils from the pillows overtime will discolor the white and that would be most upsetting.
My husband also loves this and he told me to just hang it up as a tapestry as he doesn't want to see it cut.  I actually agree with him which is why I wonder if I will ever find a use for this.

The second choice is this fabric
I was originally going to make cushions out of.
This is also a print that was a Hermes scarf and is called Circuit 24.

I did the calculations and figured it was cheaper to buy the fabric and get someone to make it rather than buy the cushions outright.
Plus you get the flexibility of choosing your exact size.
I don't mind it but Mr CSW thinks there is a clash of tones and he thinks we should just make cushions as planned.

My third choice is the Jardin Bleu by Manuel Canovas.
It was a hard call between this colorway and the blue
but the flexibility of this won out in the end.

I just picked this out today intending to use it to cover my dining chairs but I draped it over the headboard to try.

Mr CSW likes it but once again he says it is a shame to cut it and we should hang it!
At this rate we won't need to paint or wallpaper walls with all the fabric draped around the house...

I still don't know what to do and I may just leave as is
which seems to be the theme around the house!

  1. I love the wall painting and your three options, but maybe the second / geometric pattern would be my choice

    1. Thanks for your input ordinette! I might have to order another meter then bc I only have two meters.

  2. I like the second one best. I know I am a big wow girl, but the ivory is kind of Meh to me - not enough personality for a lovely like you! I think that Hermes print will look divine!

    1. I thought so long term but then that means I need to order more bc I won't have enough for cushions...I do love that print!

  3. Or, you could use the Circuit 24 AND paint your walls in a gray/blue tone:). It looks so Art Deco headboard to me, very glam and polished.

    1. You are killing me - paint??!! This is one of the few walls that is actually done hehe.

  4. Gorgeous. I love the Canovas but I'm basically obsessed with the entire line. That first fabric is to die for. Too gorgeous to risk discolouration. And who does not like F&B. Here in the colonies, we are obsessed with it too. Every house is painted mouse's back with a brinjal door. And that's OK with me!

    1. I love Canovas as well. I was literally shaking my head at the showroom. But too funny about farrow and ball bc I swear they have some sort of visual crack in those pots of paint bc it just has that x factor which makes everyone go back again and again! I too adore that mouse and brinjal combo :)

  5. Okay, how long have you had the monkey print? Longer than two years...do the headboard in it. A year or less...leave the headboard as is and frame the print pronto. You must do something soon with that print.

    1. less than a year - i was hoping for a larger headboard but hey ho. But yes I was considering hemming the edges and actually hanging it.

  7. First beautiful fabric would make me feel like I was in an aviary or Hitchcock movie but that's just my take on it! Think that & fabric contestant number 3 would make Great Wall hangings. Number 2 for me or keep headboard as is. Coincidentally, we're having to make decisions about our headboard too. Good luck. Den x

    1. So funny Den! number 3 was actually meant for the dining room chairs. At this rate I might just leave it too...x

  8. Our new headboard was just delivered on Saturday but it is still not installed properly. Still I love having an upholstered headboard.
I have to say I like the Canovas, that would make for an interesting headboard which co-ordinates with your wallcolour. The birds would make a nice wall hanging and the geometric: yes to cushions as you planned. Fun to see your fabrics Naomi! xo

    1. Cant wait to see your headboard. I just had an itch to cover with fabrics and it was an excuse to play but as usual it is hard to stick to a decision!! x

  9. Had left some comments on Fbook before seeing this post. Agree with others, the current fabric is lovely but seems rather bland for your personality - and is as you say rather a decorator resale look.
I adore the birds and monkeys fabric now that you've shown more of it - but still not as a headboard. Agree with your husband would look fabulous as a tapestry, or as another alternative (depending on how much you have) - as a covering for a chaise longue, or chair that won't be used much, eg a hall chair - or for scatter cushions. It's spectacular! Didn't realise you could buy Hermes scarf fabric by yard either. Your hall cupboards must be full of lovely treasures! Pammie xxx

    1. Loved your comments on FB Pammie. Actually the blandness suits my personality hehe. But you were spot on when you picked up it was upside down with the jungle scene. yes you can buy the fabric and it is much more economical to make cushions that way! But I am considering the tapestry more and more xxx

  10. Oh I love the Canovas print!
I can imagine a few beautiful jardinere's placed stratigically on bedside tables and an orchid or two...
looks like you are having fun!

    1. Isn't it just delightful? I had such a hard time choosing the color bc it also comes in blue and green and red. I might use this to make kitchen blinds one day!

  11. N, all three are lovely, but I think the best choice would be number 2.
The other 2 are just too beautiful to cut up....
I think you might have to keep looking, though, as I have a feeling that you haven't found the correct design yet.

    1. Ruth - I think you are right...It might just not be the one for the headboard but right for other things!

  12. I do really love number one. My second choice would be number 3...I agree it would be sad to cut out those fabulous fabric, but on another hand it might also be sad to just have them folded waiting...

  13. What a great post, I have been doing some hugely unglamorous things (just unblocked the loo amongst others) This is just what I needed a little debate over the merits of all undeniably beautiful choices, the perfect antidote! They are all great, if you are plain everywhere else, perhaps a real statement with the first does the trick. If you want that bland 'boutique hotel' in dove-grey tones look, the silk would be chic and relaxing, but it is done quite widely now, and you strike me as always slightly ahead of the crowd!

    1. One of my loos doesn't have a proper wall so believe me I understand...Choice overload is fun and very diverting and at this rate with opinions still not unified and not one overwhelming vote it might stay generic look!

  14. Naomi,
The headboard is GSL's favorite percussion instrument so my approach is more accoustical and would use a tuning fork to aid in selection. But based just on raw aesthetics, I am leaning Equateur Imprime.

    1. Oh GSL! Yes I thought you might like the wild of the jungle.;)

  15. They are all lovely!
The Equateur reminds me so much of the Toucans service. Circuit 24 is very deco in its simplicity, and would be very easy to work in with other textures/patterns etc, and the cotton silk mix is softer than plain cotton for a bedroom.

    1. Thank and you are so right - it does look like the toucans service which I like as well! But I am wondering if I should go shibori though...

    2. Sounds wonderful. Shibori is really beautiful!

  16. Hello Naomi, third time lucky in trying to post... I think I'd keep the plain headboard as I get bored with patterns too quickly. Love the equateur print: make it into cushions; they'd be fabulous. I would hate to display my own house. A shabby cluttered mess...I need to do something with the kitchen, but just getting started eludes me. Your updates are great. Just love seeing the transformation. Wish I had your eye... Xsue

    1. Gosh I am so sorry about the comments and know it can be frustrating bc i encounter it myself!! Funny bc i also get bored with pattern and then I get sick of it which is a negative feeling. My house is a cluttered mess as well but i just dont take pics of it!!! I say if it works - just leave it Sue. x

  18. My pick would be the third one, "Jardin Bleu". Theme-wise, I think it goes really well with the wallpaper you chose for your closet. You will just have to close your eyes (figuratively) and cut whatever fabric you end up choosing!! I know how it feels not wanting to cut fabric because it looks so nice. I bought a beautiful Japanese raw denim for a skirt, and was hesitating over cutting it. My friend and classmate started shouting at me, "JUST CUT IT!!!" If you hesitate for too long, the project will never get done!

    1. its funny bc i am pleased with the tone with that too but then what do i use for my dining chairs ;P

You are so right about the cut!!! I seem to take enough pleasure though from just looking at it being a simple girl though!!

  19. I kinda like the plain........I guess it depends on your pillows and quilt cover. I have a faux leather headboard - so easy to keep clean and goes with most things x

  21. Just catching up - I say go with what you love the most. Ignore the hair oil factor. By the time it looks bad enough you'll want to recover it anyway. And you should have what you love in your home, but especially your bedroom.
But I can't believe you just buy fabric without an idea of where it's going to end up and then just sit on it!! You need to use it! It's too beautiful to sit in a box! xx

    1. You must have bought shoes or a dress waiting for a right occasion? It's kind of like that for me. But my only worry about the jungle scene is that I like throws on my bed and I think it might clash! X
