Will work for wallpaper

Even when I have no plans for renovation or redecoration,
I trawl home decor websites for fun.
Now that I am toying with the idea of decorating in a few months,
the idea of wallpaper has become an obsession.

Via de Gournay designed by Alison Henry
This is one of the rooms I never tire of.

Even though I hardly ever use it,
I have a complete penchant for wallpaper.

Another motif I am in love with...
The Cherry blossom from de Gournay

So much so that if God forbid my iPad got stolen and someone looked at my web history, no one would believe that someone actually looked at that many wallpapers.  They would surely think it belonged to a nerdy teenage boy who computer programmed to replace the word big boobies for chinoiserie wallpaper.

One of the many wallpapers brands I have been researching
is the paradigm of all wallcoverings that is
de Gournay.  They do all hand painted and handcrafted designs.

This is the one area where things get a little tetchy between
Mr CSW and I.

Not only due to budget concerns but aesthetic issues.

When I said to him that I was thinking of getting wallpaper for certain walls and areas, I was thinking along the lines of the design ethos of the blog Chinoiserie Chic.

But then he said,
"Just make sure it isn't that flowers and birds stuff yeah?"

"So what do you want then?" I challenged.

"Um, don't know but just none of that really girly stuff please."

"Oh but girly stuff like boobs and bums plastered
over the walls might be ok would it?"
I storm out of the room.

The after dinner I say things like,
"If you really, really loved me,
you would let me do whatever I wanted..."

Sometimes in a marriage, it isn't things like "Camilla" that become
a problem but in our case dishwashers and wallpaper.

Marriage complications Via
This emotional leveraging/blackmail doesn't seem to work but then again when God was doling out feminine charm and wiles,
I was at held up at the sarcasm and cynicism queue.

But the universe was not helping me with my de Gournay addiction as their wallpaper was the main feature at the lobby of the
Decorex interior decor fair last week.

Also the other weekend, the Telegraph newspaper featured the home of Claud Cecil Gurney who is the owner of the very firm.

Funny enough while I love the house, the one thing I noticed is that their walls are quite sparse.  Don't get me wrong, each room is beautiful and flawless but I have a lot of pictures and prints and I would miss them if they were in storage.

Another option I am considering is the British company
I saw at the Decorex fair calledTimorous Beasties.
Their colors palette naturally suit the light in Britain as well.

Tree of Life toile

This blue-gray, gray blue tone -
shall we just refer this color as grue or blay for future reference because I am leaning towards this color a lot.
If I had free reign, I would use this pattern below in the study.
Opera Botanica
I love this for a feature wall or the loo.
Merian Palm
But you just can't get away from purrrrty things
like butterflies.
Butterflies
I admit that I really don't know what is happening and might just paint the walls. I have to solidify my kitchen plans this week...
I shall update you on my plans soon!

  1. Well, you know I nurse an addiction to De Gournay as well - and I first came across them at Decorex around 14 years ago.
Laughing at your problems with Mr CSW though, as I have a similar problem - my husband will never agree to anything with flowers on it. Which is why I'm sneaking the butterfly wallpaper into the Laundry, a room he is unlikely to ever enter. Our bedroom had strict instructions on the whole "no flower" front.... and I would desperately love to put a tree peonie wallpaper in our study, but we compromised and were going for the Scenes of India wallpaper from De Gournay (only 3 panels, framed as the whole room is so expensive).
I do agree with you though about the picture aspect and the wallpaper. I think De Gournay best used in a space where it is the star. As he's done it throughout his whole house, there isn't any room for Art/ prints etc. Good luck with your decision making... I still have 3 wallpapers left to choose. Decisions, decisions... xx

    1. Heidi, save me an inch of that paper to frame! Wow, you are going to own De Gourney, going down on a silk cushion now and bowing to you.

    2. All hail Heidi and Mr AV for having such foresight. Tell him he does the whole room and we will build him a little temple...What is it with guys and flowers? Don't they like nature? And it's not like he comes up with a proper idea either. I can not wait to see end result - It's that terracotta or gray hue you have chosen? I am thinking perhaps fish papers for the loo except Mr CSW thinks he might feel he is in an aquarium so I just can't seem to win...xx

  2. Every single example you've shown, I love. But I see what you mean re paintings etc. Perhaps you could paper the smaller rooms in the house and paint the rest. Too much pattern hitting you in the face everywhere might get a bit annoying after a while. But these patterns are gorgeous. Try swapping "if you really, really loved me..." for "This is what's happening..." quickly followed by "It's done!" Ha! Giving him control of stacking the dishwasher has clearly gone to his head! Meow!

    1. It is gorgeous but I realized that I prefer art more and i have a bit so there aren't that many spare walls left. Might be saving a lot of money!! Yes I know what you mean though about committing to a lot of pattern - I think Heidi's idea of using panels is a good compromise. You are right though - I give him way too much say. Screw democracy. I need a coup.

  3. Yep, there have been times when I have taken extra jobs just to buy wallpaper, I kid you not!
I love that article, I thought he came over really well, de Gourney would be my dream wallpaper.
Oh mine has the same reaction to Chinoisierie - I don't care, I pay for the home stuff which makes me Minister of Interiors, so what I say goes!

    1. I swear I would intern at de gournay for a discount or the scraps of cut offs at the moment. Yes I thought the article was great and who knew they worked at croydon market in the beginning?! But good taste and good eye is what it is. But all those lead times are discouraging - I seem to be want things NOW!

  4. Each is breathtaking. I can understand why you're obsessed, I'm now in love with Opera Botanica. Would you believe beautiful patterns is one reason why I like crazy pants?

I like grue, it sounds like a color.

    1. It is ridiculous to choose even if you had carte blanche right? Opera Botanica in real life was even more fun...I can see why you like crazy pants but you can wear them because you are thin! Bums are not as forgiving as walls :p Love grue...

  5. When we bought this house, every room was ugly wallpaper - it was a horrendous job to get off and I vowed I would not use it for years! However I love it, though except for the bathroom, is creeping back in more judicious ways! Love your choices!

    1. It must be the collective consciousness Wendy because wallpaper is back baby! I am also leaning towards grasscloth but the choice isn't great here - either really crap or super duper gournay expensive. At the mo, they are just that - only choices..! :)

    2. I have grasscloth in one small bedroom... if you don't mind the fact that you can distinctly see the seams and joins then you'll love it too... but it's flowers and things that are my favourites... oh and birdies!!

  6. Dammit they ought to sponsor you.
I like the more minimal designs, like the cherry blossoms. The fancier designs would make me feel boxed in especially in smaller spaces

    1. Wish they would!! The cherry blossoms are divine. I don't think I would tire of it. Sometimes the intricate designs have the opposite effect of making the room cosier or interesting. But I can at least rearrange a gallery wall but not a wallpaper...

  7. I love your friend Heidi's comment about butterfly wallpaper in the laundry because her husband is unlikely to enter there. I put one feature wall of wall paper in our bedroom last year because I was so determined to have at least a little wallpaper in the house. Oh, and then we did the light shade in matching wallpaper (but truthfully that wasn't very successful :( ) I love my bedroom wallpaper and wish I had the money to do more wallpaper. Ah, you have so many wonderful choices; for sure, something wonderful will be chosen whatever Mr CSW thinks about it!

    1. Yes I would do the same as Heidi except he is the one who seems to to do the tidying in the house plus we don't have the spare room as something as luxurious as a laundry room in London as you know! Matching stuff is sooo hard...Perhaps you could paint a mural?

  8. I'd like you to come to my home and help me redecorate it! You're so talented at finding nice decoration!

  9. You seem to like wallpaper, even some dramatic ones. The butterfly one is extra cute!
I remember choosing wallpapers for our house, back in 1996 ( ! ) and it was v e r y exhausting, as there were already then so many to choose from.
In the end, I gave up and almost blindly chose the necessary ones. Since they still hang on our walls, and I can live with them, I´m satisfied.
Maybe you could narrow your choices to just a few of the very best ?
Does it help you at all, if you´d imagine placing the furniture in and let the decoration decide the wallpaper?
Does this make any sense at all?

    1. Yes you are right I need to file it down but it is all so stressful at the moment...But yes I need to stop fantasy choosing and get real! :)

  10. The de Gournay wallpapers are stunning, like jewellery for one's home! I can see why you are obsessed. I wonder if wallpaper is as popular in North America - I hardly ever see it when I visit other people's homes. In contrast, the last few times I visited my inlaws in Sweden, I was struck by how they have every single room in their homes was covered in wallpaper. The fish print in the bathroom is gorgeous, as is the turquoise blue one with the birds.

    1. It is the jewellry for sure. I think it is getting popular as well in North America - sales are inching up. But while I paint as for me it complements my gallery wall for some reason I just want that feeling of it being dressed. I do like the fish print as well!!

  11. Gah! I can't seem to reply to this! Bloody iPad!
Love this post and am so excited by the fact that there are such beautiful wallpapers out there. I showed J the de Gournay website last night expecting him to diss it, but, what a shock, he loves some of them!
I have no idea how much a small panel would cost, but it seems we might go for a little bit of de Gournay cherry blossoms somewhere in our renovation! I'm thinking on a wall in the living room.
Of course, it will depend very much on the size and cost, but there's a stockist near us in Sydney, so we will go and have a look at least!

    1. Isn't the ipad so annoying at times?! I must say that it is now used purely for browsing because it stalls and then you have to retype the whole thing over again...
Lucky you that he likes it! I think a small panel could go a long way if used right - I asked and they do take orders for just one roll here. I am thinking that maybe I will just order the one roll and put it in the small spaces in the loos. Let us know how you go!

  13. Naomi, I adore both of these companies and their marvelous papers! Something about a home with wallpaper is just so luxe since it's rare. I mean, in our parents day everyone had it, and then now we all have paint. At a friends' beautiful home recently, I was in love with the rich look of it. I hope you get your wish and the paper you love! xKim

    1. Yeah I think there is a layer that the paper brings - i love paint too but for some reason I want that extra touch if that makes any sense. I just have to commit! xx

  14. Hi Naomi... Have been most amused reading this post!.... I think you need to "box clever" ... ie .. I always make a big fuss of "The Study" ... this is the room that Mr R-I 'owns'... and I make sure it always receives top priority....Is there something Mr CSW really wants?.... In the process of my house, I have moved towards and away from wallpaper continuously! I have also been dally-ing with panelling. We are about to commence interior finishes here and there and suddenly I'm all for the wallpaper again! The good thing about wall paper is that you can apply it once everything is done. If you paint in neutral colours... you can always creep back later and apply the paper when no-one's looking!! Wallpaper is SO divine really... but is has to be one that you adore and it can honestly take a room from great to absolutely fabulous!. There is none better than de Gournay in my opinion! ..

    1. Gosh you are smart - you were in the feminine wiles queue while I was at the other one for sure! Yes perhaps I should try that except he is sooo simple. Yes I must realize I can do this in stages but part of me wants it to be done already. Am a bit tired now Jenny but I cant wait to see your choices! xx

  15. Oh my goodness - that de Gournay wallpaper is to die for. I've never heard of it before (this post has opened my eyes to the wide world of wallpaper). But you are right that if you choose a busy wallpaper then what do you do with all your wall hangings?? I'm rubbish at things like decorating, I will be curious to see how you progress! :)

    1. Isn't it just? It is a nice escape to boring details of the renovation like wiring and pipes ;)

  16. Oooh I quite like the idea of this brand of wallpaper. I love an accent wall and where I've wanted to add a bit of additional interest to a wall, I've always used pictures, oh and in my old flat I used this sticky thing from Next Home which had lots of beautiful woodland images on, but it was like a tape rather than wallpaper - I'm sure you will know what the technical name for it is.

Anyway, I hope you get your way or at least come to some compromise because the Gournay wallpaper is unique and stunning. Can you customise the design on it do you know? xx

    1. I didn't know next did restickable wallpaper? Yes this is like the Chanel of wallpapers but I am still considering so many options. Part of me thinks I should just buy a proper painting instead now!! And all the pinterest images are not helping! But customised stuff is couture prices...xx

    2. Couture prices, but a great investment, no? 2 things I will always spend a little more on just simply because of the amount of time I spend there - work and home xx

  19. I totally feel like your reno twin right down and so glad we are both going through the same ups and downs. I love love love the De Gournay wallpaper and can't help staring every time I drive past their shop. I'm feeling your pain with having to show samples to the hubby. He seriously says he doesn't like anything I show him as he lacks any vision. My 3.5 year old son puts more thought into what I show him and totally wants to be involved in picking things out with me. Good luck and you better take a trip to Myla as the De Gournay will be worth it :) xox

    1. It's just tedious. We are still working out technical behind the walls stuff like wiring etc but that is taking away from stuff one needs to preorder as you know because everything in this country has a lead time - even John Lewis. So quite painful - he comes around half the time eventually but I don't feel like lobbying either. You are so funny! Myla?! ;P xx

  21. After being a wallpaper stalker myself I picked up my first roll of wallpaper from an art and craft shop in Amsterdam for only $3EUR a roll and lugged 3 of them in my suitcase back to Australia! I got swirls as I agree they are less girly than flowers and birds. But I havent put them on the wall ... I covered the old cupboard doors in the hallway cupboard and have put some off cuts into frames :) Art is great for walls and you can change it around when you want a new look, but if you ever do wallpaper (and Im sure you will) you will be so pleased you did. Go on you know you want to :)
